Copper alloy poker. Cast round-section rod with a rounded bullet-shaped end and a slightly expanded handle with moulded ribbed grip on its upper part and a grooved sub-hemispherical terminal. There are five closely-spaced [3.5mm apart] moulded ribs or grooves occupying a zone of length 26.5mm above the bullet end, with a series of seven moulded grooves set 16mm apart above this, including a broader central pair of ribs and ending in a basal collar below the handle. Relief at the handle end and grip may be lathe-turned. The rod or bar is lightly bent. A series of casually diagonally in…

Copper alloy figurine fragment. Three dimensional solid cast model of a swan with raised curved neck and opening wings [head lost], with moulded detail of feathers on its wings, and to a lesser degree on its breast. A basal screw-threaded fixing pin may suggest this comes either from an ornamental grouping of Classical or agricultural character, or from the decorated end of the handle of a poker or other element of a fireside companion set. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1825-1925 Height: 32.2mm, Width: 36mm, Length: 29.5mm, Weight: 36.71gms

Copper alloy possible poker fragment. Solid cast acorn-shaped finial or terminal from a handle, possibly part of a light companion set for fireside use. A small knop appears atop the acorn, whose cup is delineated but lacks any surface texture. Rust may appear at the flat basal end, which is of 11.4mm diameter, perhaps where the terminal was attached to a poker or its handle. A pit here suggests the object was finished on a lathe. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Height: 26.9mm, Diameter: 12.4mm, Weight: 14.81gms

Copper alloy possible poker handle fragment. Cast finial with a rounded terminal knop surmounting the upper four-knobbed stage of a tripartite arrangement of nested petal motifs, the lowest springing from a further knobbed collar. All these elements are polished, perhaps by handling. The object bears some of these details in simplified form at the back, though the basal petals described above are merely hollowed behind. The reverse also has a granular surface suggesting casting in sand. This might suggest this to be the handle from part of a fireside companion set of relatively recent…

Copper alloy poker fragment. A cast square-section bar, expanded to a rounded point at one end, and with a possibly broken hollow end above a concave dimple at the other above a rounded constriction and moulded collar at the other. The upper end presumably fitted into a separate handle [now lost]. Lightly bent. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 131mm, Diameter (at collar): 9.7mm, Weight: 47.31gms

Copper alloy handle. Cast handle with a heart-shaped terminal and with vegetal decoration along its full length, and with a screw-threaded lug protruding from a collared end; probably for a poker or other element from a fireside companion set. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Length: 140mm, Width: 56.7mm, Thickness: 7.7mm, Weight: 67.71gms

Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex figurative mount in the form of a perched eagle with its wings folded and neck craned right. A thick basal U-shaped lug bears a vertically drilled hole of diameter 3.3mm for attachment. The perfunctory casting is comparable to that occurring on the decorative handles of fireside companion sets, though the size of the attachment hole suggests the object which this adorned was somewhat lighter, perhaps an item of tableware. The eagle re-entered the popular decorative repertoire in Britain after the final defeat of Napoleon [1815]: the capture of E…

Heavy, cast iron, handle - badly corroded. The object is mostly orangey brown in colour representing active iron corrosion deposits, interspersed with decoration which is mid grey in colour. It is a long cylinder in shape with an irregular expansion of its lower half. In section it is round. The artefact flares out at both ends to form a rounded terminal lip. On the bottom end is a shallow rounded knop. The top end is flat but irregular. The object is decorated in high relief with what appears to be foliage and tendrils. The leaves are arrowhead shaped where identifiable. The shape…

An incomplete cast copper alloy four-armed object. This is posisbly a sword quillon of post-medieval date. However, this would be impractical as a functional sword, and could be purely ceremonial. A more likely use for this is as a decorative hand guard for a fire poker or such like. One arm is missing. The underside is plain and uneven, as it was meant to be unseen. The quillon is curved so that the terminals of the decorated side curve downwards to shield the hand from damage. The upper side has cast decoration, portraying leaves and thistles at the terminal. The central hole, to …

Copper alloy poker fragment. Concavo-convex casting representing a perched eagle, probably a handle for part of a fireside companion set; a vertical screw-threaded fixing hole in the base indicates a recent date. The motif became especially popular in the period after the Napoleonic Wars, when the British capture of French standards topped with gilded eagles was much celebrated and commemorated; and subsequently as the merits of the defeated Napoleon were canvassed by liberal opinion. Suggested date: Modern, 1850-1930. Height: 41mm, Width: 30mm, Thickness:1.8mm, Weight: 14.96gms.
