Iron and copper alloy penknife fragment. Two iron blades and possibly another implement for a folding knife, retained between fragmentary flat plain copper alloy side plates of thickness 0.7mm by long rivets – whether one or two is now uncertain. A flat oval plate with faint traces of cross-hatching marks the end of the knife handle. Side plates of bone or ivory would have been secured outside the copper plates which remain and would have butted up to the end plate. The object has been exploded by the expansion of its corroding iron blades. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-190…

A fragment of a Modern copper alloy and mother-of-pearl penknife, c.AD 1850-1900. Rounded end from a penknife retaining a sheet metal plate [thickness 0.3mm] formerly separating its folding blades, and retaining a scrap of a mother-of-pearl side plate on one side. A single metal rivet passes though the pearl near the terminal, holding it to the copper alloy plate fragment. The terminal is undecorated.

Possible copper alloy penknife fragment. A small flat cast trapezoid strip broken from one end of a larger object, with a square-headed rivet projecting from one side, rust-stained on the other. Copper alloy and iron probable penknife fragment. A pair of oval-ended copper alloy end-plates c.1.8mm thick bearing faint traces of vertically incised ornament and the stub of an iron blade of thickness 3mm held between them. An incomplete, cast copper alloy artefact, probably a side plate from the handle of a Post Medieval or Modern folding knife or penknife dating from about AD 1800 - 1950. It is trapezoidal in shape, gradually widening from a rounded end to a break. It is a flattened semicircle in cross-section. On the front of the rounded end is a wide transverse groove showing signs of iron corrosion. The rear face has a raised edge leaving the reverse concave, except at the rounded end which is solid. There are the remains of an iron rivet set off centre in the solid area which aligns with the corros…
