Part of one arm of a pair of nutcrackers – or shellfish crackers – with a rhomboid section stem expanded at its outer end to form a rectangular flat textured surface with faceted back, broken across its outer end, probably at the site of its articulation with a counterpart. Incomplete copper alloy nut cracker dating to the post-medieval to modern period (AD1700-1900). The object consists of one arm and handle. The crushing box has not survived. The top of the arm is circular in cross-section, decorated with a moulded collar. The arm then curves outwards and flattens forming a D-shaped handle with a tapered end. A copper alloy nutcracker fragment. The object comprises the upper end of one arm of a pair of nutcrackers. The single point hinge at the head remains in the form of a rounded lug. The head is semi-hexagonal in plan on the obverse and is decorated with a floral pattern. Copper alloy nutcracker fragment. Part of a cast round-section handle and one end of the expanded hemispherical-section flat ‘blade’ at the end of the arm bearing two rows of triangular stamps to confer improved grip. The arm bears multiple incised circumferential rings. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly comments that implements for breaking open the claws of shellfish at table were also similar to, and may easily be confused with, nutcrackers.
