A copper alloy object of Early Medieval date, most likely from a set of linked dress pins, dating to c. AD 700-800.  The plate is lozenge shaped with a rectangular cross section and is slightly convex. An integral suspension loop is at both ends of the longest (opposing) arms and are set at right angles to the plane of the plate. The front is decorated with four sectioned designs. An incomplete probable cast copper-alloy gilded head originating from an Anglo-Saxon linked pin. Only part of the head of the pin survives. Such pins date to c. 720-800 AD. The entire front of the pinhead was originally gilded, though on the higher points of the object this has now largely worn away, surviving primarily in the recesses of the chip-carved design. Only a sub-triangular section of head survives, the neck and shank itself are missing. The outer edge shows the arc of the circular pin head, which would have had a full diameter of approximately 22mm. There is a small …

An early medieval (c.AD 700-1800) cast copper alloy mount, or an element from a set of linked dress pins. The plate is lozenge-shaped with a single hole in both of the longest (opposing) arms. The front is decorated with a stylised zoomorphic design including a central design element.Above and to the left is a triangular zone of vertical lines, and to the right a sub-triangular zone containing three horizontal bands. The interpretation is unclear due to the worn state but suggestions inlcude: a bird with its eye in the centre and a long beak curving downwards, with the body towards th…

An incomplete, middle Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy linked pin, c.AD 700-800. Only c.70% of the object survives. The piece has been folded over and torn, probably the result of plough damage. The patination on the ragged areas indicates it is an old break. It was originally circular in form, ornamented with a double-stranded cross with expanded arms. The cross has a lozenge central body which carries a grooved + in the centre with a single, shallow, circular indentation in each quadrant. Within each armpit of the cross, there is a cast, interlaced, trilobal knot. In the surviving two oppos…

Copper alloy link from a pair of linked pins, as kindly identified by Helen Geake and Kevin Leahy, after their review of an initial identification by this reporter as a mount. Rhomboid plate of thick [0.6mm] sheet metal with a near-circular expanded lobe at either end, each with a drilled fixing hole of diameter 2.6mm. An incised panel of decoration comprises a single line border which follows the line of the sides of the object but which stops at either end, at first sight framing a simple interlaced pattern of intersecting hand-drawn loops. In fact, each border line turns at an a…

A Middle Early-Medieval (700-800) gilt copper alloy link from a two- or three-linked pin set. The link is lozenge shaped in plan, flat, and has a loop at either end. The link measures 50.92x12.27x1.21mm and weighs 3.47g. The face has been chip-carved to show an double stranded interlace pattern that runs across from one end to the other. Each loop is pierced (c.2.4mm diameter). It is very well preserved. Sets of two- or three-linked pins were fashionable in the late eighth century. The most spectacular example is the linked triple pin set from the river Witham, in Lincolnshire (see…

An Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy pin-head from a linked-pin set dating to the eighth century. The head is incomplete, but originally was oval in plan, and flat. THe head is decorated with four sub-oval cells, one in each quarter. Each cell contains a quadruped or 'dragon' in profile to the left, with head looking backwards and biting its tail. In the centre of the head the area is damaged and now concave, but appears to have carried some sort of decoration too. The corresponding area on the reverse is domed and irregular. No evidence of the pin-shaft is visible, though parts of the perimet…

A copper alloy artefact (now in two pieces), probably the spacer plate from a linked pin set, dating from the Early Medieval period, AD 700 - 900. It consists of a flat plate in the form of a narrow, elongated oval with rounded ends. There is a circular piercing in each end, one of which has broken across the piercing. The upper face is decorated wide grooves leaving in relief a rectangular border with convex long sides, and within that, two hollow lozenges, end to end. There is some blackening on the upper surface and the metal is crazed and is flaking away in places, suggesting that…
