Lead alloy ingot. A round ingot of plano-convex section which has set in a shallow hollow, probably in a fine sand bed. A sand bed would be the usual requirement for a scheme of professional lead working. The metal retains a grey tint pointing to a relatively recent date though its inflexibility suggests this to be a eutectic lead alloy rather than lead. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900
Diameter: 50mm, Thickness: 7.9mm, Weight: 82.84gms

A complete copper-alloy ingot of uncertain date.
The object is sub-rectangular with a D-shaped section, rounded corners and ends. Often referred to as ‘finger’ shaped. The object is fairly regular in form, suggesting it was cast, and no signs of hammering are present.
The metal has a dark green/brown patina and is worn. The object is 54.7mm long, 15.4mm wide, 12.2mm thick and weighs 44.6g.
Ingots of this general form in precious metals have been found associated with Early-Medieval hoards such as 2010 T373 (YORYM-CEE620) from Bedale, North Yorkshire. These however g…

Two complete but undiagnostic silver ingots.
The first ingot is sub-cylindrical in shape with rounded ends, but is more elongated than the second and more worn. It measures: 23.5mm length and 8mm in width. It weighs 8.4 grams.
The second ingot is sub-cylindrical in shape with rounded ends. It measures: 18.1mm length and 12.6mm width. It weighs: 12.6 grams.
These objects cannot be demonstrated to be over 300 year old, therefore are undiagnostic and fall out of the criterira of the Treasure Act.

A cast lead artefact, probably an ingot made to conveniently consolidate waste lead for re-working, possibly of Medieval or Post-medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1800. It is drop-shaped in plan, with a flat base and a convex upper surface making it D shaped in cross-section. There are no mouldings, but there is a small, rectangular depression in the upper side at the pointed end of the teardrop, which does not penetrate completely through the object. There is a scratched asterix or star on the reverse. The object has a light grey patina. It is 53.8mm long, 32.1mm wide and 14.8m…

A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC.
Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.

A cast object of uncertain function and date made of a white metal, possibly an ingot. The object is oval in shape and sub-oval in cross-section. One face is flat. The opposite face features four parallel longitudinal grooves. The sides are rounded and the surfaces generally uneven.
The object measures 18.5mm long, 14mm wide, 7.6mm maximum thickness and weighs 7.62 grams.

Copper alloy possible ingot. A small cylindrical pellet, dark in its tint and like a guinea-pig turd in its size and form, with a U-shaped cut-out. Base metal possible ingots of this form have been suggested [by this reporter and few others!] to represent some aspect of a possibly Early Medieval system of bullion exchange, but none of the examples recorded to date have such a cut-out. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500

A fragment of a silver ingot of unknown date. A fraction of two original straight edges remain, they converge at a rounded corner, suggesting the original object was sub-rectangular or sub-square. The remaining perimeter of the object consists of fresh angular breaks. The material is likely silver: it is not magnetic. One surface is even and smooth showing striations in varying directions. The opposing surface is uneven and textured.
Measurements: length 38.5 mm, width 37.1 mm, thickness 6.9 mm. Weight: 55.68 g.

Lead possible ingot fragment. One end of a small cast bar of sub-rectangular section, pointed at one end and broken at the other. Patinated. The rough stippled surface may arise from sand used to prevent adhesion to a closed mould; a sand bed would be a feature of a professional scheme of lead-working. Lead ingot. Cast discoid plano-convex ingot, formed by pouring molten led into a shallow bowl-shaped hollow, or possibly into the base of a vessel with a curved base. Patinated. The appearance of imprints from a finely sanded surface may suggest this to be from tidying up after an episode of formal lead working, where a casting bed would be used. The surface of the object as cast is irregular, probably due to the cooling process as the metal congealed. Similar objects come from Early Medieval and Medieval contexts – one from a 10th-century context Beverley, Lurk Lane, was associa…

A complete copper alloy probable ingot of possible Bronze Age or later dating (2300 BC to 1500 AD).
The probable ingot is a pointed oval shape, with a flat lower side and a convex (domed) upper side. No faceting appears to be present around the edges. Multiple air bubbles or casting flaws are present.
It measures 88.0 mm in length, 34.3 mm wide and 9.1 mm thick. It weighs 127.1 g (4.48 oz).
The ingot is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. There are areas of bright green copper corrosion present, these areas should be monitored and the ingot stored in a sealed air…

A cast and hammered copper alloy ingot of unknown date. This consists of a small, smooth piece of copper alloy, which is an elongated oval in plan, and slightly wedge-shaped in profile. It was probably hammered on a flat surface to achieve this form, and bears possible hammer-marks on its flat sides.
The piece is 22.86mm long, 10.82mm wide and has a thickness of 3.98mm. It weighs 5.17 grams.
The lack of diagnostic features makes this type of object difficult to date, beyond saying it must belong somewhere between the Bronze Age to Early Medieval periods. There are a number …

A fragment from a possible Bronze Age cast copper alloy bun ingot.
The fragment is only a small portion of the object with one surviving edge which is curved suggesting this was originally circular in plan. It has a flat reverse and convex upper surface creating a sub-triangular cross section. This indicates the ingot would have been domed originally. The reverse is mostly flat and plain whilst the upper surface has more uneven smooth depression. the cross section reveals several hollows created from air pockets in the casting. The object is a dark brown sometimes green colour.

Part of a lead alloy ingot. It is slightly wider at the base than the top, and narrow along its length. There are no distinguishing marks, and has an even brown patina. There is no indication that it was used by suspension, although half of it is missing. The shape would suggest a relatively modern origin.
Dimensions: 34m wide and 32mm long, 21mm high, it weighs 199.84g

Length: 10.23mm; width: 7.41mm; 4.98mm and weight: 2.8g.

A substantial lead alloy ingot. The ingot is roughly rectangular in shape and section. It is slightly concave on one side, which may be contraction after casting. It has an even brown patina. It approximates to 55 Scandinavian units of 4.43g, although at this scale that is not conclusive. Although lead was used widely over a long period of time, this artefact has been found in association with early medieval finds on a possible Romano-British site. It is therefore suggested that this might be early medieval in date.
Dimensions: 70mm long and 30mm wide, 15mm deep and weighs 240g
