Greenstone hone, sub-rectangular in plan and profile and oval in section, with ground sides and grooved faces. One face has a central linear groove, about 70 mm long, with a narrower transverse groove, about 16 mm long, crossing it a little more than half way along its length. The other face is dimpled wth about 40 circular depressions, which are bordered on both ends, suggesting that the hone is complete and not broken, but may have been re-used as a new tool from an earlier piece. These depressions may have been used for a grip, while using the other side to sharpen hooks or needles…

Stone: Norwegian Schist Hone fragment. End of a bar-shaped hone of Telemark Schist, of sub-rectangular section, slightly dished by wear along one side, abraded overall and probably broken in antiquity. Though first introduced in the Viking Age, most hones of this material reflect its later, medieval, dominance of the trade in sharpening stones. Suggested date: Medieval, 1100-1400. Length: 37.09mm, Width: 27.61mm, Thickness: 15.74mm, Weight: 24.07gms.

An end fragment of a sandstone hone stone. Deliberate horizontal scratched across three of the faces and also across the end culd be a decorative device, but are more likely to be a result of sharpening a small narrow object such as pins. Could be medieval in date, from the 15th century, but hones were also used well into the post-medieval period and so attributing a close date to this object is difficult.
