Prehistoric grindstone  of possible Bronze Age date. The Grindstone is made of a light reddish brown quartzite pebble that is sub-rectantular in plan and sub-oval in section. This object has a flat worn distal end and has been  worn enough  create a slightly concave section on the on the right margin. There appears to be some pecking or battering at the proximal end of the stone. Similar to Partridge, W (2017) DEV-94CED5: A BRONZE AGE GRINDSTONE Web page available at: https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/865036

A complete possible saddle quern handstone of basaltic composition of Neolithic date, c.4000 – 3000 BC. The object is sub-ovate in plan and section with two flattened surfaces, likely formed by repeated grinding. One surface is fairly shallow while the second is more prominent and heavily worked with an approximately 45 degree angle. A large removal with two smaller adjacent removals, presumably accidental, are present to one edge of the large worked surface. A smaller chip is present at the opposite side of the smaller surface. The object is 122.8mm long, 73.9mm wide, 43…

A quartzite beach cobble utilised as a grindstone, of probable Prehistoric date. The cobble is most likely from the Salcombe pebble beds, deriving ultimately from the permian river systems of Normandy. The cobble has an oval plan and cross section, but is truncated, forming a well-worn oval facet at one end, exhibiting some battering damage as well as one edge being slightly bevelled through use. It is otherwise unmodified with the exeption of further, far less pronounced, wear-related facets to either side of the cobble, as well as shallow depressions at the centre of each face. All …

A natural, unmodified beach cobble of uncertain date which has been used as a grinding stone or pestle. An elongated oval in plan and in profile, oval in section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). An oval patch, 46 mm long and 24 mm wide, has been worn near the distal end of the left hand side, when viewing the ventral surface. The surface of this patch is worn through percussion and smoothed by rubbing, apparently when held at an angle in one hand. The ventral surfac…

A grinding stone or pestle of uncertain date, sub-circular in plan, a narrow oval in profile and section. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). There is a shallow, linear scar in the centre of the dorsal face, at an angle of 45 degrees from the medial line and 30mm in length may be contemporary with its use or later plough damage. A shorter, deeper scar near the distal end may also be the result of plough damage. The distal end of the cobble has been broken off to form a …

Piece of chamfered hard grey micaceous siltstone. Possibly a roofing flag as this stone was widely used in the Roman period, particularly for reroofing older buildings. However it could well be a bevelled palette grinder. Comparison with other artefacts of this type (for example the one found during the Roman villa dig at Carnarvon Primary School, Bingham, Notts) make it seem the more likely option. Measures 83 x 57 x 15mm and weighs 60.4g. Dates to between c43 and c410 AD.

A thick remnant of a core with a patch of nodular cortex remaining. However the piece has been altered by heat, perhaps accidentally but certainly it has then been re-used with knowledge of the properties of internally fractured flint. It is now opaque dark brown; likely altered from translucent brown and full of hackly fractures. Starting with an edge the flint has been used as a grinder. This has occurred on several edges and produced small facets but on the ilustrated side it has developed into a large curved surface. As it is used it gradually splinters, rather than running smoot…

Sandstone rotary grindstone, probably of Medieval or Post Medieval date. About 40% of the stone remains, it was a sub circular disk with a hole drilled through the centre. On the remaining fragment the maximum width between the central hole and edge is 60.9mm and the minimum 45.4mm. It appears it was flat on both sides with a flat outer edge although it is now badly pitted. It is 128mm by 68mm across, 59.4mm thick and weighs 530 grams. The stone has been examined by Dennis Parsons who gave his opinion that it is a sandstone with mica and from a non-Somerset source. Although similar …

A fine-grained, well-cremented sanstone object, which has been made into a flattened spherical shape. This type of well-cremented sanstone is a very tough rock. It is possible that it was used as a grindstone, or possibly even for polishing.

A Prehistoric - Post Medieval rounded stone (Highland granite) object possibly a grinder or a smoother. The stone has been worked to form a globular shape with one surface slightly flattened, possibly through use. Jon Cotton and Geoff Egan suggest that it may be a grinder or have a use in the laundry process but it is a little small to be a linen smoother. It is impossible to assign a date with any degree of certainty. The stone could have been deliberately brought to London for manufacturing or it may have arrived in London as ballast and then be modified. Dimensions: diame…

A large polishing or rubbing stone recovered in assocation with a quantity of early Roman pottery and possibly dating from that period (AD50-250). The recrystalised sandstone stone measures 73.4mm long, 68.7mm wide, 35.9m thick and weighs approximately 339g. One corner is damaged. The remainder of the faceted surfaces have been worn smooth through use.

Possible Roman palette (or mixing) stone. Weighs 125.54g and measures 74.87mm in length, 52.45mm in width and 16.81mm in thickness. The palette stone is rectangular in plan with a very smooth top and bottom surface. The top surface of the stone has a slight angle to it so that in section the stone tapers slightly at one edge. This may be an indication of wear through use on one face. The stone would have been used for grinding and mixing. Two similar examples can be seen in 'Roman Castleford, Volume I, The small finds' edited by Cool & Philo. Fig. 112, Nos. 83 & 84.
