Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint fabricator, 54.6mm in length, struck from a brown flint and of potential Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. The tool has a triangular cross section and is worked on the dorsal surface only, with abrupt scaled retouch along the sides. The distal tip has low angle retouch to define a wedge shape with a rounded end. The ventral surface is unworked and the tool has broken across its width.

A complete flint implement, likely a fabricator dating to the late Neolithic period (c. 3000-2500 BC). The object is pear-shaped with an oval cross section. It has a rounded base and blunt point. Both faces present covering, scalar, semi-abrupt retouch. It is made of a light brown / grey flint. Dimensions: 36.7mm; width 15.4mm; thickness 6.3mm; weight 3.42g This object is a part of a collection of flints that have been recovered from three fields over a number of decades. The group includes arrowheads and flakes demonstrating the different phases of flint working. Objects …

Grey flint possible fabricator. A knapped flint implement with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat rippled ventral surface with a tiny striking platform at one end. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long edge of a triangular-section object; other marks along the arises between faces are from fortuitous edge-on impacts. A probable flint fabricator or rod probably dating from the early Mesolithic to late bronze-age period. Description: The fabricator is an elongated rectangle in shape and triangular in cross-section. It is made on a secondary flake with a small area of pale brown cortex at the distal end. The dorsal side bears the scars of the removal of two earlier longitudinal flakes. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch but there are conchoidal ripples along the full length of the ventral face. There is invasive, scaled semi-abrupt flake removal scar…

Grey flint with off-white patch near its tip, probable fabricator fragment. A thick pointed flake of plano-convex section with large flakes initially trimmed from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect is carried over most of the surface; this was perhaps interrupted by removal of a further flake from the butt end of the tool. Though this need not have interfered with its function, it does not bear wear suggesting it to be the result of a deliberate modification. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: …

Grey flint with cortex spot, fabricator. A finger-shaped flake with covering multangular scalar hard hammer retouch across all surfaces, producing a ragged rhomboid or lentoid section. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment while orange spots may hint at rolling in gravel. An incomplete flint impliment, probably a fabricator. The tool is worked from grey flint with faceted removal scars on all sides and is narrow, with a curved profile and a plano convex cross section. The object tapers from a break at the mid section to a rounded tip which has broken off at the end. The dorsal surface of the tool has been polished which suggests it is likely to be Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date.

A knapped flint fabricator of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 3000 B.C.-c. 1600 B.C.). The tool has been formed from a secondary black flint nodule. It has a triangular cross section with a small amount of cortex remaining on the dorsal surface. The ridge on the dorsal surface is backed with continuous retouch to facilitate handling. One end has heavy abrasion due to wear which continues down the right hand edge for the entire length of the tool. Such an object is thought to have been used to retouch other stone tools or possibly as a strike-a-light…

A complete flint Fabricator of Mesolithic date (9,000-3,450 BC). The lithic is lentoid in plan and bi-convex in section. Both the dorsal and ventral surfaces have long scaled flaking with a single negative scar centrally in the mesal portion of both. The proximal and distal ends are tapered and rounded. All edges have semi-abrupt retouch. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is grey in colour with dark and light grey inclusions throughout.
