A lead possible lid or dish dating to c.AD 1500-1800. The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The obverse is a convex dome, and there is a central circle of pitting with a diameter measuring 14.5mm. The reverse is concave and has the same pitting in the centre. It is possible that this was once a motif that has since been worn. Similar examples can be found in Forsyth & Egan, Toys, Trifles and Trinkets (2005, 267;293). Dimensions: Diameter 30.5mm, Thickness 8.8mm, Weight 26.88g.

A fragment of post-medieval tin-glazed London Delft earthenware probable dish, dating to the late 17th century. The fabric is a creamy-pink/ buff colour with very small inclusions, many eroded out. Where the glazing survives it is thick and smooth to touch. The fragment is very water-worn. The convex surface (the reverse) has a patch of glazing pinkish-brown in colour. The concave surface is decorated with two parallel thinnish blue lines, to one side of which is a wider yellowish-orange band of colour and set at 90 degrees to it two lines of painted blue in a V-shape. A green vertic…

Description: Two fragments of a large silver and silver gilt dish dating to the late Roman period. The smaller fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and curves slightly, though is rather distorted through post-depositional damage. One edge has been heavily gilded, the other apparently demonstrating a soldered-on strip with a central groove that has also been gilded. The second (larger) fragment is broadly hemispherical, curving strongly in plan and consisting two strips partly connected via an inner soldered section (though the outer section only partially survives). As with the…

A Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) small dish, probably dating to the 15th-17th century. The shape of the dish is slightly distorted; it has a flat base and a wide flange with a beaded rim. On the upper surface of the flange are three stamps, comprising a merchants mark / sun / merchants mark. Both merchants' marks looks to be of same design and consist of a 4 with MF ligated below. On the base is a centrally scratched letter K possibly an owners mark. Both the interior and exterior of the bowl have a central incised circle. Cotterell does not list this mark. Dimens…

Two fragments, a rim and body sherd, of a ceramic Samian ware dish with an everted rim with raised foliate mouldings. The bowl would have been wheel thrown within a mould with these decorative motifs impressed into it. The scroll like trails are part of leaf motif and the surface slip has been removed so that they look lighter and have been worn almost flat. The slip survives well on both sherds, giving the fine red fabric an added shine, as well as protecting it from wear. The body sherd is plain and curves slightly in profile so that it is probably from the base of a shallow dish as…

Fragment of a late medieval, 15th century, tin glazed earthenware bowl or dish, AD.1400-1450. This is a fragment of a dish that has been deliberately cut down so as to leave the central glazed design intact. The design is what looks like a scallop shell set within a square border. This medallion is in the centre of a cross with the voids filled by a diagonal hatching. All designs are in blue glaze on a white background. The fabric of the vessel is light pink with few visible inclusions. Possibly a fragment of Paterna blue ceramic, a site north west of Valencia, spain. Height: 1…

A circular pewter dish, 195 mm in diameter, 18 mm deep with a plain, narrow rim that is 13 mm wide. On the base is a row of four poorly-stamped touch marks, set within four shields with only their upper sections visible, from left to right, the letters 'HH', a crescent, a heart pierced with two arrows crossed and a fleur de lis. These marks most closely match those of Henry Hoskyn of Launceston illustrated in Cotterell (1929) on page 236, no.2416, where he is dated to c.1680-1730. But an example of a dish in the Royal Institution of Cornwall's Richardson collection, 1932.176 (see belo…

There is also a horizontal groove on the inner surface approximately 10mm below the rim. The height of the dish is 59.74mm. The fabric is buff and there is an even green glaze covering all surfaces. A Saxon (early-medieval) dish rim sherd with small holes from leached chalk inclusions, with a few inclusions still in situ. In Winchester this fabric was used in the late Saxon period but the fabric is used elsewhere, for example Hamwic, from an earlier date (Helen Rees pers. comm. October 2009), so an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The sherd is a crude quadrilateral form with dark brown/orange surfaces. The rim is very subtle, with the side travelling down below, before angling inwards sharply at c. 45 degrees.

A fragment of a lead or tin alloy flat vessel rim. The perimeter suggests originally the rim was c.210mm diameter. The rim has a flat fillet edge which may have been on the top or bottom on the flange. The edges, with the exception of the rim are all broken, but not recently. The surfaces have a mid grey patina. It measures 32.37mm long across the rim, 27.4mm wide from the rim to the broken edge opposite and the rim is 2.38mm thick. It weighs 7.1g. The fragment is probably a flat vessel rim, such as a shallow plate rather than a deep dish. The condition and nature of the metal, is…
