Complete tin alloy or tombac alloy cross, of Eastern Christian design with either a or a stand or a casting jet still attached, or this stub was to be removed altogether and the cross attached to another object as decoration, or it was yet to be shaped into a suspension loop, the latter would allow the cross to be displayed the right way up. The design to the front is faintly defined, though the major elements are visible as being of Russian/Greek orthodox, and Byzantine mixed origin, seemingly an amalgamation of various Mediterranean styles, this is likely to have been par…

A complete medieval copper alloy mount from an altar cross, a product of the Limoges industry of Central France (c. AD 1100 - 1300). This was a major centre of production for enamelled metalwork, particularly ecclesiastical pieces from the late 12th to mid 14th centuries. The mount is the shape of the letter T turned on its side, and is the left arm of the cross. The cross would most likely have been made up of four separate pieces, the three other arms representing the three remaining Evangelists - St John, St Mark, St Matthew. The image on this piece is most likely the Ox of St …

Cast copper alloy cross, Medieval-Post Medieval in date. It is in the form of a cross, with a flat-sided and roughly square-shaped centre from which emerge four arms with oval cross sections. These become slightly more circular before meeting a bi-conical knop, which form the termini of three of the arms with a pellet of the outer side of the knop. The fourth arm extends in a circular sectioned bar another 39mm beyond it's knop and terminates in a worn break. The knop on this arm is different from the others in that it is flanked by moulded raised bands, around a millimetre thick.…

A cast lead alloy Latin cross, probably of medieval date, c. AD 1100-1500. The arms and shaft are sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in section. There is no perforation, loop or obvious feature for attachment, although there are possibly grooves visible below the junction of the arms, and some scratches or incised lines across the arms, which could indicated binding or attachment by sewing. The base of the shaft is slightly tapered, which may indicate the cross could have been mounted or inserted in some larger frame or object. The met…
