This is a limestone corbel - a vault springer. The date is late medieval, probably 14th century. Dr John Crook has examined it, and although he was unable to identify the stone type, it may be Beer stone from the quarries on the Dorset/Devon border. The decoration at the front of the corbel appears to be intertwined foliate decoration, which in places is quite worn. John believes that the marking-out lines on the top of the stone probably relate in some way to the angle of the ribs that were to spring from the top of the corbel.
