Complete cleaver, of Wymer’s type H (Wymer. J, J, 1999) in slightly rolled condition with a small amount of recent damage to some of the edges, now patinated gloss black with areas of orange mottles from uneven exposure to iron oxides, the coarse inclusions have also picked up this colour. All flake scars appear to be semi-hard hammer struck with fairly pronounced negative bulbs of percussion, although they are also quite invasive over both faces with the flake scars overlapping at the mid-point, leaving no trace of the “blank” this piece was made from. Only one other clea…

Cleaver in very fresh, unrolled condition, of Wymer. J.J. (1999) type H, of orange and dark brown patinated flint from exposure to the iron oxides within sand and gravels. An oblique thermal crack runs from a coarse inclusion on the ventral face to the edges and links up right across the dorsal face, this shows as a thin black line, though it looks alarming, the flint appears to be quite intact. Two other “blind” cracks are present but do not project through the flint. These flaws were present at the time of knapping, one flake in particular on the left lateral edge (when viewed o…

Flint bifacial cleaver made on a Levallois flake with a U-shaped (Wymer Type H) form in plan, and a lozenge-shaped profile with a straight edge (Wymer Type e), dating from the Middle Palaeolithic period. The cleaver has a straight transverse cutting edge at the distal end opposite to the curved butt end (Wymer Type b) at the proximal end which has partly been removed by an invasive flake, perhaps to remove the natural fault in the flint which remains as a patch of white cortex. The cleaver edge has been formed by the removal of tranchet flakes from the right lateral edge of the ventra…

A fragment of an iron knife or cleaver blade dating to the Roman period. The blade is triangular in section, broken at one end and tapering to a tip at the other. It may be the tip of a Type 4 cleaver, rather than a knife although this is not certain. Measurements: L (82) mm ; max W 30 mm ; max T 5 mm ; Wt 31 g ;

Handaxe, of Cleaver form (Wymer's type H) with the primary cutting-edge profile of type E (straight), the other edge can be regarded as a type F (reverse "S" twist), though this is largely due to a natural hollow and awkward knapping angles towards the butt on this side, rather than production from a large struck flake blank, Hollows and cortex are present to both faces suggesting this Cleaver was produced from an amoebic nodule, or natural fractures thereof. All flake removals are semi-hard hammer struck, invasive, and where platform angles allow, overlap the centre-line. The broad t…

A Roman iron cleaver dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The cleaver is of Manning's Type 2a and features a wide blade extending from the conical socket which is formed of a piece of sheet iron which has been bent around to overlap at the mouth of the socket. The socket features an ovular perforation on one side which would have housed a rivet or nail to fix the cleaver to a wooden handle. The back of the balde is straight and level and follows the line of the socket. The cutting edge is convex and features a number of old breaks. The tip of the blade is missing. The cleaver is heavi…

Incomplete iron cleaver, probably of Roman date. The cleaver has a circular cross sectioned socket that tapers towards the blade. An indented line down one side may indicate were it was beaten flat then rolled round and overlapped but the details are obscured by corrosion. There is no clear indication of a rivet hole but the open end is slightly uneven and a small piece has broken off one side. Between the socket and the blade is a solid rectangular cross sectioned piece. Beyond this is the flatter blade. The back of the blade is flattened and continues in line with the socket while th…

A large flint cleaver, with a significant amount of iron staining rendering the entire object a yellow brown colour. There is a large amount of white patination in addition to this, although the underlying colour appears to be a dark grey, almost black shade. The shape is almost triangular, with blunted corners, and a large knob on the left side of the dorsal face which is very blunt and mainly formed of cortex left on the object. It does not appear to have been used for more than a handle to manipulate the cutting edge on the right side. As implied above, large amounts of cortex remai…

An incomplete cast iron probable cleaver, probably dating to the Roman period between AD 43-410 (length: 185mm; width: 51mm; thickness at shaft: 15mm; weight: 220.70g). The artefact has an incomplete sub-rectangular tang (approximate length: 55mm), which expands outwards into a straight-backed tool with a damaged blade/ cutting edge, which was probably curved in shape. Overall, the artefact is in a worn and corroded condition. Similar examples are illustrated in W H Manning's 'Catalogue of the Romano-British Iron Tools, Fittings and Weapons in the British Museum;, 1985, page 123, pl…

Lower Paleolithic Acheulian bifacial flint cleaver, 138mm long, 125mm wide and 55mm thick. It weighs 1017 grams and is made from yellow lincolnshire wolds flint. It is missing about 3-4cm from its narrow end which has been lost recently. The object has one corticated side and has been bifacially worked on the edge and has unifacially worked divergent sides. It has good initial shaping in the form of longtitudinal diagonal flaking on one surface.

Strongly convex blade which is wide in proportion to its length, with an almost straight back which continues the line of the socket and begins to curve upwards towards the missing point. The socket is almost closed and is broken across the nail-hole. Manning (1985, 120-2, plte 57) Type 1b, The form of the cleaver is closest to Q96. The majoity of these cleavers were used for butchering meat and intended for chopping rather than slicing.
