A small cast copper alloy censer cover or finial mount, 45.4mm in height and of early Medieval / late Anglo Saxon (c11th - 12th century) date. It is of architectural form, resembling a square church tower, with a plinth at the base with two projecting rounded perforated lugs which contain rusted iron. These may be the remains of narrow rods which would have attached to a suspension chain, allowing the cover to be raised so that the bowl beneath could be filled with incense. The object is decorated in a simple style which is comparable to the Winchester style o…

Late Saxon suspension-unit from ?censer (or ?balance), comprising a short conical, round-sectioned spike and radiating from below its base three round-sectioned arms forming a T-shape with transversely pierced animal-head terminals. Although there is some similarity to a more commonly found medieval type of suspension-unit for a lamp or censer (e.g. the example illustrated in EAA 32, fig. 50, no. 2), it is closer to a pre-Conquest balance suspension-unit from York, see Mainman and Rogers (2000), Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York (2000), 2559-2561, no. 10413. A fragment from a probable cast copper-alloy Medieval censer cover c. 1050 - 1200 AD. The fragment is from the top/cover of the censor. These are typically moulded in an 'architectural' form akin to a building, probably a church. The fragment has the look of the gable section of the representative roof. There are two clear partial holes and it is decorated with incised cross hatch and curved lines on all external surfaces. There is no clear 'edge' nor 'rim, to the fragment. The cover is comparable to WILT-B2BD06 AND HESH-8FC8F6 on this database, published in Geake (2005, 343-345; f…

Fragment of a copper alloy openwork conical object, probably from the upper part of a medieval censer. The apex, where there would have been some form of suspension, is missing (break probably not old). There are three oval apertures in the sides and the scalloped base is broken across three round perforations (breaks old but with one area of recent damage). Some vertical grooves are scratched rather than decorative. Extant height and diamater 23 and 27.5mm. 12th - 13th century.

A fragment from a copper-alloy medieval censer cover (c. 12th century, possibly late 11th century). It represents the broken top of such a lid which would have been in a moulded, 'architectural' form: a building, probably a church. The object appears to be have a curved base. In the centre above this rise two short straight sides which are then angled to sharply towards each other to create a flat cover. This is the single complete gabled wing, with angled roof, from a square tower which would originally have had four such wings in a cruciform arrangement. The front of this element (g
