Bone pin beater. Naturally formed large mammal limb bone, trimmed to a rounded point and smoothed and glossed by wear and handling. The gloss of the shaft towards its tip in particular suggests use as a textile working tool. Single ended simple weaving tools are a class linked to the Anglo-Scandinavian use of the vertical loom. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000. Length: 103.6mm, Width: 20.1mm, Thickness: 16.4mm, Weight: 9.59gms

An Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) - Medieval bone pin-beater dating AD720 - 1100. This pin-beater is cigar-shaped with two working tapered ends; both ends are damaged and the tips are broken and missing. The surface of the pin-beater is highly polished from wear against the hand and against the threads of the loom. There are several longitudinal scratches across all the surfaces and at one end there are also several small transverse sratches.
