Copper alloy balance arm. Cast sub-circular section bar, bent, with remains of a pierced hole at the fulcrum – probably not illustrated here as images were only available for the terminal – and one end of the bar with a zoomorphic flattened double lobe, perhaps attended by ‘eyes’ on the beam, pierced for attachment of a chain or cord to suspend the scale pan [lost]. This amounts to half the arm, though the incomplete recording leaves dimensions and consequently the size of image presented here very uncertain. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Length: 101…

Copper alloy scale balance beam fragment. Cast square section bar with a rounded knop at one end, a step at the other broken end, and a graduated scale incised as regular grooves along one side; the source record holds this to be decorative while this reporter would deem it functional, permitting adjustment of the balance when in use and perhaps implying operation in the manner of a steelyard with a re-positionable poise. Anglo-Scandinavian. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 75.9mm, Width: 3mm, Thickness: 2.8mm, Weight: 5.16gms

Fragment of a post-medieval tinned copper-alloy probable balance arm. It has a D-shaped terminal with a circular concavity on top. The arm terminates in a worn break at one end. It is triangular in cross-section here but gradually becomes trapezoidal (narrower face on top) as it widens toward the terminal. The underside of the terminal is moderately convex and bears a single straight transverse groove dividing it from the arm. The metal is patinated dull grey. Such objects have sometimes been identified as sugar tongs. Similar to NMS-09E313. 16th to 17th century. Length: 31.2mm. Width…

A copper alloy fragment of an arm possibly from a folding balance or scales of Medieval to Post Medieval date, AD 1400 - 1600. The arm is hexagonal in cross-section, but only one terminal survives. The break is patinated. The perforated suspension loop is trilobed and mounted on an integral cast circular collar.  The object is 17.5mm long, 7.4mm wide, 6.4mm thick and weighs 2.93g. This arm would have probably been part of a set of folding scales. A more complete example is NCL-C0C467, and a complete example is illustrated on page 323 of The Medieval …

Copper alloy balance fragment. Cast sub-rectangular section bar with rounded corners, slotted at either end where the thinner tabs at the ends of ends of narrower folding arms are secured, each by a single rivet. The arms still enjoy limited play. Rust staining at the midpoint of the bar suggests the loss of an iron suspension handle. An incomplete copper-alloy folding balance, of composite parts fitted together, dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1400). The balance is comprised of the central bar, both arms and a separate suspension loop through the terminal of each arm. In its current condition the balance weighs 8.74g. The object is fixed in the folded-up position that gives it a maximum height of 51.1mm, including dangling ring-links. It occupies a maximum width of 33.7mm and spreads out on the thickness axis to a maximum 17.7mm due to the bent arms. Cent…

Medieval balance: The balance is formed by a horizontal bar which has a slot at either terminal. The two arms formed by the slot each has a rivet hole, supporting a rivet which acts as an axis bar for an arm. The arms that are pivoted on the axis bar are both an elongated triangle and is oval in section. The terminal at the tip is slightly flattened, rounded with a perforation in the centre. This terminal would have had pans suspended from chains, but these are missing. The opposite terminal, which is pivoted is narrowed in width and has a perforation and a sma…
