A silver hammered penny of Henry VIII (1509-1547 AD). Second coinage (1526-1544). Initial mark: star. Minted in Durham under Archbishop Cuthbert Tunstall. See North 1813.
Obverse shows crowned and enthroned front-facing king. Legend should read: H D G ROSA SIE SPIA (Henry by the grace of God a rose without a thorn) but is very faint.
Reverse shows a shield divided by a long cross, with C D beside shield. Legend reads: CIVI TAS DUR RAM (City of Durham).
Coin is pierced in two places near edge, damage appears to have happened post burial.…
