A probably modern replica copying an early medieval silver penny of Harold II (1066) Mint: Bristol, moneyer: Ceorl (North 837). Ref: North 1994: 182.   The coin's weight, style and condition are consistent with it being a modern replica/fake, its weight considerably higher than most examples of Harold II's coinage (most finds at c.1.2-1.35g).  Slightly worn, slight bend across the middle. Obverse: Right facing crowned bust of Harold II, without sceptre. Legend: + HAROLD REX ANGL Reverse: 'PAX' in the centre of the reverse. Leg…

A modern replica of a Hiberno-Norse penny produced using the obverse from the Hiberno-Norse coin copying Aethelred II's (AD 978-1016) long cross combined with the reverse copying his last small cross. The piece is possibly a replica made by a re-enactment group as the coin does not appear to have been made to deliberately deceive, the reverse including the fictitious inscription HROLF M-O WIRHALH.

A modern copy of a silver medieval penny probably of Henry III dating to the period AD 1247 - 1278. Voided long cross reverse. Moneyer unclear. Mint unclear. Uncertain class. The edges of the coin have a rim, suggesting this is a modern copy of a medieval coin.

A post medieval milled copper alloy coin, proabably a penny, of unknown ruler, probably dating to AD 1780- 1900. Possibly forged, the coin appears to be made from a diverse metal with a copper alloy coating that has almost worn away. A patina, mainly yellow in colour, but some green present can be seen around the outside edges. This is slightly raised from the metal surface and may have been the surface coating upon the coin.

A modern copy of an Early Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward the Elder (899-924), based upon Norrth 660 (floral penny) albeit seemingly intended to be a halfpenny version, of which no real examples are known. The style and flan of the coin are not consistent with an early-medieval piece- the flan is too smooth and the design/inscription too well defined and crisp. It may be an 'Ashmore copy' who produced a very similar fake penny of this type (T. Abramson 'Anglo-Saxon counterfeits', p.152). Obverse: Small cross pattee within a plain inner circle; inscription: EADVVEARD REX Rev…

A modern imitation of a medieval silver penny of William I (1066-1089), Pax type (North 858-50). The reverse inscription reads STAMFORD CASTLE rather than giiving a mint and moneyer and the weight is too high for an official, medieval issue. It can probably be considered a tourist/re-enactment piece of the late 20th-early 21st century Obverse description: Facing bust with sceptre right. Obverse inscription: [GVLI]ELM REX Reverse description: Short cross with circled letter in each angle, probably +PAX Reverse inscription: +STAMFORD CASTLE Diameter: 19.9mm, Weight: 1.67g…

A modern replica, roughly copying a silver penny of Henry VI (AD 1422 to AD 1461), annulet issue (AD 1422 to AD 1427). The bust and lettering are both extremely crude- it is possibly a re-enactment replica with a ficticious mint name. Diameter: 15.2 mm Thickness: 1.1 mm Weight: 0.9 g

A MODERN replica of an early-medieval penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Radiate/ Small cross type (1044-46), Reference: North 816. The coin was most likely produced by David Greenhalgh, aka Grunel Moneta, a re-enactor who produces replicas of a wide variety of coins, often with the reverse displaying the name 'GRVNAL'. This coin is not listed on the current website (http://www.grunal.com/; Oct 2013). See T Abramson (2012), Anglo-Saxon Counterfeits').

A probable MODERN IMITATION of an Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver penny of Ethelred II (978-1016). Bare headed type, 997-1003 (North 1994, 159, ref: 774). Moneyer Leofman, Canterbury mint. The coin's weight is too high for an early-medieval issue and its style and quality of execution is poor suggesting it is a modern imitation. A probably modern imitation lead alloy coin in the form of an Early Medieval silver coin. The piece appears to be inspired by a coin of Eadgar (959 - 975), Pre-reform two line type (959 - 973). It is very similar to North number 741, but the moneyer's name is 'NORB/ER' which is not one of the listed possibilities. The finder has had the piece tested using XRF and it is made of a high lead alloy. The crosses in the design seem thinner and cruder than the illustrated genuine coins. The piece is 22.63mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.9g.
