An incomplete copper-alloy Colchester derivative, Harlow brooch of 1st century AD date. The head has two decorative vertical grooves at each end and a flat underside. At the centre of the underside is a perforated lug into which the now missing axis bar would have fitted. A miniature medieval brooch, roughly oval in shape, and terminating in two joined hands. The brooch has two facets which carry an enigmatic inscription, punctuated by flowers and colons. Reading clockwise from the pin, the letters are On the inner band N V I V N: I I M I N I On the outer band: V I I I T I: I: I - I I V L V I (?)I The meaning of this is unclear, but may have magical or amuletic significance. The two hands may once have held a pearl, which is customary for brooches of this type. The brooch is gold, and dates from the thirteenth century.

2006 T381 "A medieval brooch , the frame formed from a circular-sectioned hoop, its pin with a flattened edge and a wide rectangular collar. The pin was formerly attached to the frame by a loop attachment which is now broken. Undecorated brooches like this were produced in large numbers in the medieval period and occur frequently in base metal such as copper-alloy. They were manufactured in a wide range of sizes (for a miniature, base-metal example see British Museum MME1856,7-1,2752). Given their utilitarian aspect, it is likely that they were used as a practical fastening for clothe…

A Medieval brooch formed from a flattened hoop. The reverse is slightly rounded. There is a break at the point in the frame where a pin would have been attached. The front carries an inscription, interspersed with ring and dot decoration. The remaining letters are O.V.N.Q.V.E.R.A.V.E.Z which should read MOVN CVER AVEZ [have my heart] with the first M missing, though the left-hand upright of the letter is still just visible. The brooch is silver- gilt and dates from the fourteenth century. Thank you to Malcolm Jones for his help with reading the inscription.
