Anglo-Saxon coin-brooch. The object is a silver penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), of the Hammer Cross type, c. AD 1060, which has been mounted as a brooch or badge. The original coin was minted in Thetford, probably by the moneyer Godlef, although the secondary treatment of the coin means that most of the inscription is no longer legible, with only __FONÐET__, from the middle of the reverse inscription clearly legible. The reverse of the coin, showing a cross, has been gilded for display, and five holes have been pierced in the coin, one in the centre and one at the end o…

Description: A fragment of a silver possible Anglo-Saxon brooch. This fragment has old breaks on all edges and is now roughly triangular in shape. The front face has traces of worn possibly chip carved decoration, what is depicted is very unclear. The back face is rough and also worn. Dimensions:10.66mm by 10.41mm in size, 2.38mm in thickness and 0.83g in weight. Discussion: This fragment is really too small to identify its original function but a brooch fragment, possibly from a square headed brooch does seem likely. The precious metal content of this possible brooch f…

Description: A fragment of a possible silver gilt Anglo Saxon brooch, perhaps a fragment of the catch plate area of a square headed brooch. The fragment is very worn and none of the edges appear to be original. It is roughly rectangular in shape but one short edge is diagonal. The chip carving consists of four border grooves and the surviving part of the design within these appears to depict the lower halves of two scroll like motifs with a pellet between them. One of these motifs may have an open work hole through it or this could be due to wear or damage. On the back face there…

Description: A fragment of incomplete silver early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch, with only the head surviving. The head is rectangular with U-shaped cut-outs forming a cross shape; there are small punched crescents along its edges on the front. On the reverse there is an integral pin lug with a mass of corroded iron surrounding and within it from the pin. The brooch is much worn and it seems likely that it is incomplete, with an old worn break across the top of the bow. Its dark grey colour, with silvery areas, suggested that the brooch was silver or copper-alloy with tinning. Dim…

Description: A fragment of a possible Anglo-Saxon brooch or alternatively some other item of Anglo-Saxon jewellery. The fragment is roughly oval in shape, with two complete opposing curvilinear edges; the other edges are incomplete due to old worn breaks. The fragment appears to be made from silver and has an attached gold and cloisonné garnet decorative element. This is hexagonal in oval shape and the cloisonné within it is divided into two cells. On the back face it can be seen that the hexagonal gold element has been attached, at least in part, via two silver rivets. There is als…

A silver hammered penny struck for Edward the Confessor (1047-66), Expanding Cross type (heavy sub-type) (North 141, no 823), issued by the moneyer Morcere at Bury St Edmunds c. AD 1050-55, and subsequently modified to form coin-brooch or badge. The reverse has been gilded, indicating that this side was intended to be displayed, with the gilding extending round the edge onto the obverse, leaving most of the obverse uncovered. A variety of pin fittings are known from coin-brooches of this period. These are most commonly riveted to the coin, but occasionally soldered. In this case no si…

A complete, 13th century, silver, annular brooch made from sheet silver. This brooch measures 25mm in diameter externally and 16mm in diameter internally. The hoop of the brooch flares outwards, therefore making the internal diameter narrower on the front face. The outer face of the hoop has circumferencial grooves along both edges. There is a crude hole through the hoop and a silver pin is in situ through this via an open loop. The pin measures 21mm in length and 2mm in width and tapers to a point. A fragment of silver Roman fibula of the mid or late first century AD was found on the same site, but is not believed to have been associated with the hoard. Cross-piece and upper bow of a small silver fibula. Even when complete, the brooch would have been no more than about 2cm in length. Impressed decoration consisting of two lines of raised zig-zag lines along the bow and encircling each side of the cross-piece. The fibula is a small example of the dolphin type, an early Roman form current in Britain in the middle of the first century AD and into the second half of the century. Repo…

An incomplete cast gilded silver radiate-headed brooch of early medieval date, comprising the head-plate and most of the bow (the pin, lower bow and foot-plate missing to old damage). A relatively fresh break has truncated the surviving portion of the brooch into two fragments across the upper portion of the bow, where it joins with the head-plate. These fit together snugly, though the break is not particularly recent. The entire front of the object is gilded, most of which survives with slight areas worn away on the very highest points of the bow. The head-plate is flat and semi-circ…

Fragment of a cast gilded silver early medieval bow brooch, probably a great square-headed brooch. It consists of slightly less than a third of the original brooch, with only around half the bow, catch-plate and less than half of the footplate. The rest of the object is missing to old breaks. The bow curves strongly in profile and demonstrates two fluted sections flanking a central raised element, decorated with incised zig-zag motifs which appear to have been inlaid with niello. Gilding survives in the fluted areas but has worn off on most of the objects' higher points. The bow trans…

Description: An incomplete and somewhat damaged cast silver composite disc brooch dating to the later Early Medieval period, c. 900-1000 AD. From a typological point of view the brooch seemingly corresponds to what is broadly Weetch's type 12, with approximately 10% of the brooch's edges and the pin fittings now missing in post-depositional damage. The main body of the brooch was originally circular in plan, with a projecting sub-rectangular 'tab' extending from each cardinal point (though now only one of these is visible due to breakage). On the upper face of the brooch is a plain…
