Part of a copper alloy circular brooch which is Early Medieval in date. The brooch is a flat disc with a raised ropework rim. The front of the disc and the rim is gilt. It is broken and the surviving fragment is 18.3mm long, 12.9mm wide and 5.8mm thick. There is a hole in the centre of the disc through which fits a small copper alloy and undecorated rivet which has also survived. The reverse of the disc is plain copper alloy with a dark brown patina. A double pin lug survives but not the pin. The brooch probably dates from the Early Anglo-Saxon period.

A fragmentary copper alloy Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch of which only the bow survives. The fragment is rectangular and arched. It has a central vertical ridge with a circular boss in the middle. Chip carved decoration is present on either side of the central ridge though corrosion and dirt obscure the details of the pattern which is in Anglo Saxon Style I animal art style. There are traces of gilding at the top and bottom of the fragment on the front. There appears to be a repair in one corner of the fragment. A small square plate of copper alloy sheet affixed by a coppe…

A copper alloy brooch or mount dating from the ninth century. The object is a rectangular plaque with two lugs on the reverse. It measures 25.7mm long, 20mm wide and 8.5mm thick. The lugs on the reverse are widely spaced, and are not central. Unfortunately they are broken which makes it impossible to determine the function of this object. If both lugs had circular holes, the object could be a strap mount. However, if one also had a slot to the hole, it could have been used as a brooch, with the pin attached to one lug and slotting into the other as a catch. Since the lugs are closer t…

A copper alloy Early Medieval Button Brooch dating from the 5th or 6th century. The brooch is circular and is 16.6mm in diameter and 3.2mm thick. It weighs 2.67g. The brooch would probably have had a raised rim, but this is missing on this example. On the reverse, the edge of the brooch is curved, making the back like a very shallow dome. There are very corroded bumps which are all that survive of the catchplate and pin mechanism. The pin is missing. The design on the front is a moulded anthropomorphic face-mask decoration with a small, flattened and rounded helmet. The eyebrows, nose…

A copper alloy fragment probably from an early Cruciform brooch of the early Medieval period. The fragment is 19.6mm long, 9.77mm wide and 4.15mm thick. It weighs 4.04g. The terminal is a solid bar of copper alloy which is D shaped in section with a slight central ridge. One end is broken and the other end has understated zoomorphic moulding probably representing the nose and nostrils of a horse. The fragment looks like the foot terminal of early Cruciform brooches such as those illustrated in West 1998 and Hattatt's visual catalogue. If this is the case then the fragment probably dat…

Part of a cast copper alloy early Anglo-Saxon brooch, probably a cruciform but perhaps a small-long brooch, dating from the 5th or 6th century. Only the lower bow and the top of the foot survives. The bow is arched with a flat back and has a moulding at the bottom creating faceted corners. The flat panel at the top of the foot is decorated with annulet punches making a border along the top and sides. The base is defined by a double incised line. Lappets project from this area. A copper alloy cruciform Early Medieval brooch fragment. Only the foot of the brooch survives. The flat panel at the top if broken. The half round panel has two collars, then there is the horse head terminal. This has defined ears, bulbous eyes and comma shaped nostrils. The end of the brooch is broken, so there may have been a spatulate extension, but since the bottom of the nostrils look to be complete, this is unlikely. The reverse of the brooch is hollowed. It has a patchy green patina. The breaks are patinated. Cruciform brooches date from the 5th or 6th century.

A cast copper-alloy side knob from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. It is half round with semi-circular top, narrow neck and raised collar at the base. The front faces of the collar and base of the top have the remains of transverse grooves that are obscured by wear and corrosion. The back face is concave with a central vertical circular aperture running through the object for a now missing iron pin bar, visible at the centre of the back face as an oval shaped perforation. There is also a hole in the apex of the round knob where the bar would have finished. The flat base of the knob h…

A cast copper-alloy side knob from an Anglo-Saxon Florid cruciform brooch. It is flat with a spatulate terminal, flanked by two panels of intricate stylised mouldings in Style I. The design can be interpreted with the spatulate area projecting from mouth of a hman face. The nose is angular and raised. The cheeks and eyes are convex mouldins and there are interlaced ribbons which could represent a beard and moustache. On the reverse are traces of two broken lugs to support the pin axis bar. The knob has a brown colour, and little patina surviving. It dates to the 6th century, about 500…
