A silver Roman denarius of Sabina, dating to the period AD 128-137 (Reece period 6). VENERI GENTRICI reverse depicting Venus standing right, holding an apple. Mint of Rome. RIC II, no.396. The coin shows significant copper corrosion product on both sides. If the coin was a contemporary copy and silver plated or washed, this would be in evidence at the through-thickness edge cracks. The principal edge crack shown on the image is clear of corrosion. The coin is unlikely to be surface coated therefore and most likely regular.
