A large dark grey flint pebble, possibly a hammer stone of  Mesolithic to Bronze Age date c.8300-800 BC. The object is a large sub-circular dark grey flint pebble. There is extensive battering over the majority of the surface consisting of percussion marks and fine flake removals. There are two small areas of pale light brown cortex remaining.  Diameter: 66.43mm and weight: 326.08g.  Dating of this hammer stone is suggested from the finder by association of a reworked Mesolithic Adze and other flint…

Granite pebble hammerstone. A large rounded water-worn cobble of a pale hard igneous rock, probably granite from Glacial Drift. Both ends are brightened and scarred by use as a pounding or hammering tool. The finder kindly notes that an area of the more extensively battered end was reused as a polisher, which has smoothed this zone over a length of 32mm. Suggested date: probably Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 89.7mm, Width: 68.6mm, Thickness: 43.8mm, Weight: c.410gms

A probable Neolithic hammer stone made from a flint pebble. The object is a large flint pebble, sub-circular in plan, ovate in profile and sub-rectangular in section, and has the majority of its surface covered in a pale grey/off-white cortex. The non-working end is damaged, possibly by farming activities, revealing the dark grey and black surface beneath the cortex. There is extensive use wear at the working end consisting of percussion marks and fine flake removal.  Dating of this hammer stone is by association of two …

A large flint hammerstone. A rounded, sub-speroidal piece of mid grey-brown flint with a low gloss patina and iron staining. There are areas of use wear (battering) on much of the surface around the "equator" of the speroid with a few areas on the "poles" where the object was held in use. These retain off-white nodule cortex. This object is probably prehistoric, but such stones have also been found in later contexts (e.g. Roman) and it is difficult to be certain of the date. Date: Prehistoric (Mesolithic to Bronze Age) - c 8300 - 800 BC Dime…

A complete rounded, ovate quartzite pebble of probable Mesolithic date (c . 9000 - 4000 BC). One end has considerable surface damage due to the stone being utilised as a hard hammer stone. Found in an area of intense Mesolithic activity that has produced a large quantity of debitage and blade cores along with typical Mesolithic tool types. The overall dimensions are as follows: 56mm in length, 54mm in width, 41mm in thickness and 198g in weight.

A rounded pebble of hard coarse sandstone, possibly used as a hammer stone for flint working in the prehistoric period. It is ovoid and has one face that is flattened which also has some chips and damage to it. It is a yellow colour with coarse grains including an abundance of angular quartz grains. The pebble is 43.3mm long, 37.5mm wide and 24.7mm thick. 52g. Hammer stones are usually made of metamorphic sandstone such as quartzite. This stone does not appear to be metamorphic, but has the same general form as a hammer stone, so has been recorded as possibly having had this function.…

Flint nodule with a thick covering of brown-stained cortex; possible hammer stone. A naturally formed flint nodule with limited surface zones of hackling, perhaps suggesting localised heating, and more extensive traces of battering which have chipped or removed areas of cortex and exposed a natural cavity. The brittle nature of the material would not make this an ideal material for any percussive function, and if the identification were sustained it would point to an improvised use. Suggested date: possibly Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Diameter: 69mm, Weight: c.345gms

A complete probable flint or cobble hammerstone of uncertain prehistoric date (c. 4000-700 BC). Description: The object is roughly cylindrical and shaped with a smooth flint-like slightly broader end, which suggests the hand-held part. There is extensive crushing across much of its opposite end of the cylinder surface and on the sides towards the same end of the cylindrical form, suggesting it's possible use as a hammerstone. Although parts of the stone have the smooth appearance of flint, there is much pitting and coarse particles which make up the whole. Measurements: 68.…

A probable hammerstone or grinding tool. A large, tapering, flint core of light grey-brown flint with heavy off-white mottled patination and frequent iron staining. A multi-platform core which has subsequently been re-used at its widest, rounded end, probably to crush or grind another material. This has resulted in an area of use chatter like that seen on round hammerstones. Date: Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 4000 to 1600 BC Dimensions: 95.2 mm x 47.9 mm x 44.1 mm Weight: 223 g

Pinkish brown rock with crystalline structures hammerstone, as kindly identified by the finder. A sub-ovoid pebble, possibly water-worn, with both ends battered and flattened by repeated impacts which have exposed its crystalline structure; this working was more energetic at a slightly broader end. The broken surfaces remain fresh, which may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. It is a rare example of a tool which could have been used to work some of the prodigious quantities of flint reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Neoli…
