A silver wire Medieval annular brooch dating from about AD 1200 - 1400. The frame is oval and the pin survives. In cross-section, the frame is a square with concave sides. It is formed from thin silver wire which has been woven, plaited or knitted together to form a square sectioned cord with a ridge at each corner, which has then been twisted to create a cable effect round the frame. The frame thus has four spiralling ridges with the ends fursed together at the constriction where the pin is attached. The frame is a hollow network of interwoven wires, rather than a solid sin…

An incomplete silver-gilt brooch of probable medieval date c. AD 1150-1400. The brooch consists of four circular hoops each that appear to have been solded together and are embellished with the same design of quatrefoil flowers and collets. The hoops are decorated with a single quatrefoil flower and at each of the junctions where the loops are joined. In-between each petalled design is a cylindrical collet, of the seven collets only three remain, albeit they are now truncated. A white paste or substance is present in one of the collets. A silver Medieval annular brooch weighting 0.69g. The circular brooch has an external diameter of 15.7mm. The loop has a 'D' shaped cross-section with flat undecorated reverse surface and convex upper surface with slightly flattened top. The loop's band has a width of 2.0mm and thickness of 0.8mm. This band contracts for 2.6mm of the circumference to a width of 0.9mm. This constriction probably has a sub-rectangular to sub-oval cross-section and the thickness remains the same as that of the rest of the loop. The upper surface of the pin-constriction is undecorated. However…

Treasure ref. 2003 T261: a small, medieval brooch which now measures 15mm x 11mm but which would originally have been circular. It has probably be misshapen in the ground. It consists of two interlocking lions whose front paws meet at a globula, punched projection and form part of the aperture for the pin attachment. The back paws of the lions meet at the pin rest which is modelled into the grotesque head of a beast. The eyes of the lions and the beasts are deeply sunken and may once have held glass or stones. Deep cavities at either side of each lion's mouth may have been mounted in …
