The front of the circular plate is worn, but decorated with a narrow raised border from which the outlines of four circles project at regular intervals. The depressed areas of the cross and circles may have held enamel (c.f. example from Great Saxham in Evison 1977) but no traces are now visible. The reverse is plain except for a missing pin and catch, consisting of two parallel projecting lugs …

Fragment of Early Saxon copper alloy, probably of a Great square-headed brooch of uncertain Hines 1997 Class. A circular collet containing a flat-topped red glass setting rises from a flat fragment decorated with moulded grooved decoration. All of the edge, apart from a very short curving length, is broken and all breaks are quite recent. It is uncertain to which part of the brooch this fragment belongs, but it may be from a crescentic foot terminal lobe such as Hines 1997 pl. 95 b. 23.5 x 29mm. First half 6th century.

Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment. Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The su…
