A complete lead weight, likely a net or loom weight, dating from the Roman to the post medieval periods (c AD 43 - 1700). The weight is cylindrical in shape with a central channel which is also circular, this is set slightly off centre. External surface smooth and unblemished.  Lead weights are difficult to date securely or assign to specific tasks without archaeological context, as they change very little and thus a wide date range is suggested. The form of these weights has been suggested as reflecting those utilised for fishing or as net sinkers, though thi…

A lead alloy cast weight or spindle whorl, probably of early medieval to medieval date (c. AD 700 - 1200). It is possible the object is a conical spindle whorl, Walton Rogers type B, which has been pinched at one end to form a misshapen cone, alternatively it could be a conical steelyard weight which has lost the iron core and wire. The object is sub-circular at the base, with a central perforation 9 mm in diameter. The apex is pinched and the perforation closed to a slit 8 mm long. It is not clear if this is accidental damage or design. Diameter 24 mm and height 14 mm. The …

Probable medieval weight; Cast lead roundel with Latin text in two concentric circles, dating to around the 13th century. The weight consists of a fairly hefty, circular piece of lead with a smaller, raised circle in the middle. The whole has cast letters running around it. The outer ring has a cross, which seems to mark the beginning of the text (like an initial mark on a coin) and reads 'IhcNA[ZA]RENVSREX' The inner circle reads IVDEOR[VM]' giving a legend which translates as 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. A small, circular hole has been pierced through th…
