A cast copper alloy mount or fitting, dating to the post medieval period (c. AD 1550 - 1750). The mount is square in shape with rounded corners and central openwork. It appears to be made up of a cross whose arms extend beyond an outer ring which makes up the frame of the piece. This frame is decorated with large indistinct pellets, two between each section. And one large one centrally placed. On the reverse set to either side are the remains of two attachment fittings; one a stump, the other bent with a tapering profile. The reverse is undecorated. Width 17.8 mm, thick…

A complete cast copper alloy bar mount of medieval date, c. AD 1300-1400. The mount is a D-sectioned bar with a convex, hemispherical waist. The bar may be decorated with traverse bands, however the metal's surface is now very corroded obscuring possible detail. The arms of the bar taper to blunt points; one point appears to terminate in an old break. The bar's reverse is flat and undecorated, with no discernable traces of attachment holes or rivets.  Length: 23 mm, width: 9 mm, thickness: 3 mm and weight: 1.6 g.

Medieval gilded copper-alloy mount consisting of two incomplete bars held on a rod. The circular sectioned rod has a globular head; it is broken at the other end. The upper bar (if the globular head of the pin is at the top) appears to have one complete arm with two semi-circular openwork arches on the underside; the other arm is snapped off part way along the first arch; there are transverse grooves at each junction of the arm & the central block which is sub-circular in plan and perforated to take the rod. The lower bar is snapped off across the first arch on both arms; these arc…

The object comprises an openwork disc which is half-circular in plan with a scalloped edge and raised pellets around the border. The openwork design comprises a series of five sub circles arranged evenly spaced in two rows: two slightly larger circles at the top, and three below. Across the length of the half-circle's diameter is a shallow raised moulding. A corroded gilded copper alloy early medieval mount, dating to c. AD 500 - 600. The mount has a flat rectangular plate with tri-lobed projecting terminals at either end. The plate is corroded but has what appears to be a chip-carved zoomorphic motif of Salin style I. Within a raised border and between two columns or bars there are sinuous interlaced lines probably representing necks and limbs, but the corroded state of the plate makes identification of the design difficult. Traces of gilding remain on the front of the plate. The rear is undecorated with t…

The inner plate is almost entirely taken up with a raised, diamond-shaped, pyramidal central boss. The ornamentation of the outer edge of the mount is such that there are trilobed terminals at each of the corners of the mount, as well as similar shaped projections in the centre of each of the sides. The back is undecorated and slightly concave. There is no obvious attachment, but each point of the shield has a corroded notch which may be the remains of rivet holes. The decoration may be related to the Arms of the Reynes family, which included chequ…

A copper alloy post medieval openwork mount (c. AD 1675 - 1715). It appears to have the form of a rosette or flower with eight petals (octofoil) with the petals at the cardinal points being slightly larger. These larger petals, however, are actually formed of deaths-heads. There is a square hole in the centre, possibly for attachment. The Death's Head motif was especially favoured in the later 17th and early 18th centuries. The object is damaged, with fragments of two petals missing. Diameter 33 mm, thickness 1.5 mm and weight 4.3 g.

Early-medieval copper-alloy mount of Carolingian type, 8th or 9th century in date. It is rectangular with a roughly convex cross-section. It has a raised strip running along the centre of the mount, with two longitudinal grooves, now mostly worn away. There is then moulded relief decoration on either side, forming a symmetrical pattern. The pattern seems to consist of a saltire cross formed of two long wedges in the centre of each side, with possibly two rounded elements to one side of this, and two more wedge-shaped elements to the other; it is probably derived from debased 'acant…

The body of the fish is curved in an exaggerated bend, with the head, including lips and large eyes, at the start of a broad curve outwards and upwards towards a smaller inwards curve at the tail. Though worn, there is evidence of casting detail to imitate scales on the body, in addition to features on the …
