Extract from report to HM Coroner by E. Ghey:
The find is a flattened gold pellet of unknown date. It is circular in shape with smooth, flat upper and lower surfaces and is therefore of consistent appearance with an Iron Age coin blank. The object appears to have been made by melting and cooling raw metal in a clay mould to create flat surfaces (for pellet moulds see Landon 2017). In coin manufacture, this would form a blank of precisely controlled weight that would be struck by an engraved die to create the desired coin design. Fine parallel striations are visible on the surface…

It was cast in two pieces, the larger brooch element having an integral lug on the reverse which fits through a piercing in the straight piece allowing for almost 180 degree articulation. The reverse of the brooch is furnished with pair of hinged lugs for the pin and a substantial catchplate. Although the pin itself is missing, rust within the hinge indicates that it was made of iron, as on the other known examples. The reverse of the straight element has a rectangular strap loop at the terminal and, towards the centre shows some ghosting …

A stone spindle whorl or loom weight, probably of Iron Age to Roman date, (c. 300 BC - AD 400). The object is a cylindrical disc carefully formed from a fine-grained sandstone. It has a very neatly drilled central perforation, 4.5 mm diameter. Both faces are flat and smooth, without decoration. There is some chipping but the object is generally in good condition.
Spindle whorls are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery) as the general form was in use for a long period. However this spindle whorl closely resembles, in material and form, oth…
