Object type: BOW BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wrexham
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This is a cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Middle Severn Valley), cf. Mackreth 2011, 3.e. The crossbar is hollow and has pierced end caps with the remains of a lug to the top centre. The bow is decorated with longitudinal ribs, the central one being most prominent. The foot, catch plate, axial rod, spring and pin are now missing. In style, this brooch resembles the early Polden Hill type with the catch plate sweeping high up the back of the bow. The surface is heavily corroded with much of the detail lost, it has a dark green/black patina.

An axe-hammer of igneous stone found in 1989 holding open the door of a shed in the rear garden of a house at Castle Place, Abergele. The finder Mr Nathan Roberts was undertaking renovation work on the house at the time. A fine example with overall pecking marks visible, blunted at the axe end, signs of damage at the butt end. One of the perforated sides is slightly concave. Shaft hole is towards the butt end, and is splayed at both ends suggesting that it was drilled from both sides (Spencer, J, pers comm, 2004). Thin section extracted and studied by Dr Richard E. Bevins of the Ge…

One half of a cast, late medieval to early post-medieval copper alloy purse bar circa (1450-1550). The remaining bar has a sub rectangular cross section and a lenticular plan view that tapers towards both ends. The end is terminated with a small knop and the central point has a concave collar and larger knop, the break is apparent just after that knop. The remnant of the fixing plate has at least two attachment holes. The surface is decorated with four equally spaced parallel pairs of diagonal groves bounded by three vertical grovesat each end of the bar. The bar has remnants of gi…

Here we have a fragment of a middle Bronze Age copper alloy dirk or sword, circa 1200BC. The blade has a shallow but discernible midrib section, clear 'shoulders' and two rivet holes to the butt end. Given the parallel edges, the simple rivet form and the possible length if this blade, I would err on the side of this being a dirk. The patina is now a very dark black/green due in part perhaps, to some restorative action.

This Roman bow brooch in copper alloy, is circa the second half of the 1st century AD. It is in the form of the 'Polden Hill' type brooch. It has the characteristic semi cylindrical wings in which the spring sits on the axis bar, which in turn is held by the pierced plate at the wing tips. A simple backward lug holds the chord in place. The head of the bow has a central knurled rib running down the spine and there are pronounced shoulders where the bow meets the wing. The lower half of the brooch and the pin are missing.

This appears to be a billon (base silver) 20-para coin of the Ottoman emperor Abdul Mejid (AH 1255-77/AD1839-61). It bears the accession date 1255 [looks like a blundered 1700] and a regnal year that may be 5 - looks like a dot (= zero, in Arabic numerals, which doesn't make sense). (Besly, Ed, pers. comm., 2012) I believe the regnal year is ٢ ie year 2. Year 0 does not exist on coins. AH dates do not exactly match AD dates. The coin was minted AD 1840/1841. Mint is قسطنطنية ie Qustantiniya/Constantinople, present day Istanbul in Turkey. (Cannon, Paul, pers. comm., June 2016)

A piece of hollow-backed ceramic decoration or sculpture in the form of the top half of the face of a man, broken across the cheeks just below the nose. Possibly decoration from a building or perhaps part of a sculpture or other artwork. The hair is long and straight, with a side parting, sweeping down the sides of the face and backwards, covering the ears. It is reminiscent of some medieval sculpture. There are however, traces of sideburns and a moustache which is more suggestive of the Edwardian style. The nose is straight and quite wide. Moulded in a yellow ceramic the face appears…

The inscription is mostly worn away but 'RICVS' of 'HENRICVS' and possibly another 'N' are just about visible.
