This is a medieval (circa late 13th century) silver gilt, annular brooch. This example is also decorated with a niello inlay. Niello is a black inlay composed of sulphides of silver and copper, used in the medieval period to distinguish incised decoration on silver and gold. The brooch has a wide flat dished form with a slightly convex upper surface, that surface is then decorated with a series of 18 rows of punched 'dots' separated by chip carved grooves, each set on an angle to the radial, forming a 'swirl' decoration. The grooves were filled with the niello and the whole surface wa…

The crossbar is short and undecorated. The top of the bow has a central decorative ridge running down the length with an indented design to each edge. The foot, majority of the catchplate, spring and pin are now lost. The surface has mostly eroded off, that which remains has a mid brown patina.

This is a nice example of a Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 3. flat wing ends type, middle Severn Valley)t Midlands). The large wings are hollow at the rear with the remains of the spring cord, still in position. The ends of the wings are pierced for a transverse spring axis bar, now missing. The wings are decorated at each end with an indented zigzag within moulded transverse lines.
The upper section of the bow has a moulded central pattern of four longitudinal groves, cut across to form small blocks. That design tapers out below t…

An incomplete Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.a-b, flat wing ends type). The axial rod is intact and the pierced top of the pin through which the rod passes, to create a hinge, is present but the majority of the pin is missing. While the axial rod lies within a tubular crossbar half of this part is also missing along with both end caps (if there ever were any) and the rod is liable to slide out. Part of the catchplate survives on the reverse of the bow. Some of the smooth original surface survives and is a dark green colour, but much …

A small copper alloy fragment of a Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill type (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.i., flat wing ends) There is some evidence of a decorated spine to the bow and possible end plates to the wings, thus leading to the possibility of a 'Polden Hill' style. The bow is broken and the spring and pin are missing.

This is a copper alloy Roman bow brooch from the 1st or 2nd century AD. From inspecting the head, it is clear that this brooch held an axis bar (fragments remain in situ) and that there was probably a lug, holding the chord at the top of the brooch. The wings may also have been decorated with vertical lines although much of the ends have now corroded away, along with the foot and catch plate.
The characteristics of this brooch suggest that it is a 'Polden Hill' type. The patination is dark green with some oxidation and flaking of the surface. On the underside of the bow, there are …

This is a copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.a, 4.b., 4.c. This example is the typical two piece construction with the main body of the brooch and a now missing, spring and pin assembly. In style, this is perhaps Polden Hill with the end-caps having been broken away but leaving us with their trace in what remains. Thus the spring, axial rod and pin have been lost as has the foot of the bow. The bow is plain but for two longitudinal ridges running down each side of the head. The crossbar is short and undecorated. Much of …

This is a copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Class 4, flat wing ends type, West Midlands), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b. Plate 46. Late 1st to early 2nd century AD (AD80-120). In style, it is consistent with the Polden Hill type with semi-cylindrical wings terminated with a perforated lug. This example is undecorated on both the high arched, tapering bow and wings. One side of the crossbar retains remnants of the original axis bar and of the spring. The top lug, pin, remaining spring and catch plate are now missing. The surface is covered with a light green corrosion a…

This is a typical example of a brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46, of 1st or 2nd century AD date. The head and bow are now all that remains with the spring and foot piece missing.
Overall, the brooch is heavily corroded and in some sections, that damage reveals what may be an iron core to the bow? The remaining patina is dark green.

This Roman bow brooch in copper alloy, is circa the second half of the 1st century AD. It is in the form of the 'Polden Hill' type brooch. It has the characteristic semi cylindrical wings in which the spring sits on the axis bar, which in turn is held by the pierced plate at the wing tips. A simple backward lug holds the chord in place. The head of the bow has a central knurled rib running down the spine and there are pronounced shoulders where the bow meets the wing. The lower half of the brooch and the pin are missing.

Copper alloy Wirral-type bow brooch dating to the 2nd century AD. Pin, headloop and foot of bow missing. The headloop would have sat above the stepped head which has three horizontal steps. These were decorated with rectangular panels of enamel in alternating colours- orange remains. The upper bow of this type of brooch is usually split into three vertical channels which are filled with enamel of alternating colours. This example is difficult to see but it appears to have this feature with traces of red, orange and black enamel remaining. There is possibly a small boss below the ena…

Cast copper alloy Wirral type bow brooch dating to the 2nd century AD.
It is incomplete, missing its headloop, pin and catchplate. It is very worn all over making detail difficult to see. The head is slightly rounded and would have had steps up to the headloop. These steps could have been decorated although it is not clear on this example. The upper bow is decorated with three vertical channels which would have been infilled with enamel in alternating colours giving a chequer board effect. Only fragments remain of some orange enamel. Below these panels the bow curves back giving an …

A Roman brooch in the 'Wirral' tradition, circa late 1st to 2nd century AD. The topmost section of the brooch has an extended horizontal ribbed flange on which there was a now broken, chain loop. The ribbing is further decorated with post casting score marks. The rear lug has in situ, the remains of an axis bar from a probable hinged mechanism. The top of the bow has a semi oval cross section decorated on the front with a panel containing three long channels that would have been infilled with enamel. There is a vestige of blue enamel to the lower part of the central channel. Ben…

This is a cast copper alloy Romano-British trumpet brooch circa 1st to 2nd century AD.
This example is very basic with a modestly expanding head, on a circular cross section bow and a simple 'acanthus' knop to the centre of the bow. The pin fixing loop at the back of the head remains but the pin and foot of the brooch are now missing. Similar finds have been recorded from the Roman site at Wroxeter and are perhaps of 'local' manufacture. The surface has a very bright green crusty patina.
