This is a lead alloy, personal seal, probably from the 13th to 14th century AD. The incised design consists of a floral pattern formed by four conjoined leaves within a circle, with the name surrounding the motif. The reverse of the seal has a now broken attachment loop and a moulded floral, or ribbon design. The name, beginning after the cross potent, would appear to be 'Si : MADOC : F : ION (ION - possible) For Seal of Madoc - Son of Ion (John). The surface is now oxidised with a mottled grey/brown patina.

An unidentified object of white metal, probably lead alloy, in the form of a human head bearing close resemblance to the character of Mr Punch or a clown. Pronounced nose and cheeks, a large, hooked chin and wide smiling mouth. The character wears a hat or cap with a broad border. The rear of the object is flat. The nose appears to have been squashed and there are signs of impact damage on both front and rear. The object is mostly a dark metallic grey colour, but with small patches of creamy white suggestive of oxidisation or paint (Jeff Spencer, CPAT, January 2015).

A lead alloy medieval to post medieval spindle whorl with an attached outer plain ring. The ring is attached to the core of the body by four lugs or stays. It is perhaps a deliberate design feature, to extend the mass with a smaller amount of lead? The ring is now crushed into the central boss, which has a vague bi-conical section. The central hole is 9.9mm in diameter and the surface has a grey/cream lead oxidised patina.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or perhaps a weight, of indeterminate date. Possibly Roman but equally, it may be post medieval. The whorl/weight has an elliptical form and is undecorated. The central hole has a diameter of 5.5mm and the wear pattern appears to be off centre, giving credence to the weight theory, perhaps fishing associated. The surface has considerable scarring with a dull cream patina.

This is a small post medieval lead geometric lead token/counter circa 16th to 17th century. The design consists of two crosses, one superimposed upon the other to form a star shape. The piece has some lead overspill to the reverse, which has no further design elements. The piece is now oxidised to a pale grey/white.

This is a simple lead alloy, bi-conical spindle whorl that may be from any period between the Roman and Post Medieval. Given the ubiquitous nature of these artefacts and the lack of any defining design on this piece, no further dating can be surmised. This object has a circumferential casting ridge and the bi-conical sides are slightly convex with no evidence of design. The central hole is 6.6mm in diameter. The surface is now greyish-white with the not uncommon lead corrosion.

This large lump (isosceles triangle with convex end) of oxidised lead is a conundrum; its origin and use remain open to speculation. It may date from any period from the Roman to the post-medieval. The six petal flower is certainly a very common symbol on medieval to post-medieval tokens and hence my presumption of date to the post-medieval. The piece has been clearly scribed with dividers on one side with a geometric six petal flower within a circle. The opposite side has a double circle with a clear central point. The piece is a near perfect 60 degrees, thus there may have been…

This medieval, flat back, lead alloy seal matrix is typical of the non-heraldic seals of the 13th century. The central decoration has a cruciform motif within a circle. The legend reads - S.Ph(or Pn or Pb!).Fi.LLYWEL. The context of the name is consistent with the shortened version of Llywellyn with the preamble probably meaning "Seal of ?? Son of". The back of the seal has a small stub, the remains of what may have been an integral loop. The surface is oxidised.

An anthropomorphic figurine with the characteristics of a child or cherub, given the proportion of the head to body and the general rounded look. It appears to be wrapped in a cloth. It is heavily corroded and the lower parts of the arms and legs are missing. It may be a votive offering. The casting is indicative of a single piece mould, given the general 'poured' appearance of the reverse.

This is an interesting lead-alloy Post Medieval personal object, most likely a pipe tamper. It takes the form of a smiling female figure in an erotic pose with her hands holding her skirt above her waist. The dress and head-dress are typical of the 16th century but the artefact is more likely to date to the 17th or 18th century. At some point in the distant past the figure has lost that part below the knees that would have served as the tamper. The artefact is a brown-grey colour with spots of light grey corrosion, where small areas of the surface have been lost mid-grey coloured me…

This lead alloy object of trapezoidal form has a hollow core and is probably a strap end. There is a notch on the reverse side to the topmost edge. The facing side is fashioned with a female head, perhaps of the goddess Diana the Roman goddess of hunting. Linked to this, on the reverse of the object there is a representation of mistletoe, this too has links to Diana and or the Greek Goddess, Artemis. The head appears to be wreathed. The iconography is suggestive of a hunting theme. The object is finely cast but the surface is in part corroded and pitted.

This lead alloy fragment has a suspension hole on one edge. The fragment is trapezoidal in shape, broken at the narrow end. The design has a central image within concentric circles and possible Fleur-de-lis in the upper corners. There is iron staining around the fixing/hanging hole and evidence of a black substance in the recessed areas. The back has a crudely incised name of ‘ANNETTA’ next to the suspension hole. The name Annetta has Irish and Welsh links and is often used as a nickname for Hannah. The picture includes an enlarged version of the reverse inscription above …

This is an interesting lead, possibly medieval spindle whorl. Dating is always difficult as they were in use from the Roman times to the late medieval. The central boss is biconical and decorated with angled ridged lines to each surface. It then has an unusual feature of an attached outer rope decorated ring. The ring is attached to the core of the body by four lugs or stays. It is a deliberate design feature, perhaps to extend the mass with a smaller amount of lead? See CPAT-39D310 for a similar object. The object is now a whitish grey with lead corrosion.

This is a lead alloy spindle whorl dating from possibly the Roman period, to the post medieval. In this case, it was found in the same field as Roman artefacts (a dolphin brooch) and another small spindle whorl, so it may be Roman in origin and it certainly has an aged look about it. It has an unusual arrangement with four extended ‘wings’ to perhaps improve on the spinning forces? The central hub, is bi-conical and undecorated, the hole is 10.5 mm in diameter. It is now a pale cream with lead sulphide corrosion.

This is a small and plain spindle whorl from perhaps the Roman period. These whorls are as ever, very difficult to tie down to an age being in use from the Roman to the post medieval. In this case, it was found in the same field as a Roman brooch and another whorl, it may then be Roman in context. The whorl is undecorated and has the typical lead sulphide corrosion, being a pale cream/white
