Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very small tool made on a flint flake. Triangular in cross section; the ventral surface is smooth, one face of the dorsal surface retaining a rough, dark cortex. Lack of a clear bulb of percussion makes identification of proximal/distal ends of the artefact very difficult. There are two or three very small areas of retouch visible, these appear on both surfaces. Greenish-grey in colour.

This is a most interesting find, an example of a possibly late Neolithic or early Bronze Age tool on a flake of chert, most probably a scraper. However, see below for more thoughts on the date. The tool is roughly triangular in shape, but with the corners of the triangle missing. It fits nicely in the hand ready for use. There is a probable bulb of percussion, along with a bulbar scar formed off the striking platform but these appear on what one would imagine to be one side of the flake rather than the base. The cutting/scraping edges are each different, one being slightly concave, th…

County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rough flake of banded chert or flint of probable Neolithic origin. With no sign of a striking platform there is however, conchoidal scarring from re-touch along one edge and curving around part of one end (the left-hand edge in the right hand image in the photo). In the hand, this has the feel of a side scraper. The material is a banded pale cream/grey colour with some minor inclusion and ferrous staining.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flake of dark/light grey banded chert that has perhaps been fashioned into a lithic implement. The convex end has conchoidal re-touch scars to one side, giving this flake a probable use as a scraper. In date this artefact is possibly Mesolithic. Other implements made from this type of material have been found in north Wales and it is suggested that they are of Mesolithic date.

A flint flake/blade. The piece is roughly triagular in shape with a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and two small areas of white and brown cortex on the dorsal surface. A sherd of probable Midlands purple ware. Made and used between 1450 and 1600AD. This very hard, red to dark purplish core has traces of a dark grey to black glaze on the inside and has a ribbed design to the outer. This material was used for a wide range of different pots, such as jars, bowls and jugs. These hard fired, somewhat plain and serviceable pots were made at Chilvers Coton and Ticknall in Derbyshire.

A complete blade or knife made on a flake. Both long, thin cutting edges show signs of retouch on the dorsal surface. The distal end still has a small area of buff-coloured cortex in situ, the proximal end has a clear bulb of percussion. The ventral surface is flat with conchoidal ripples down its length. The tool has a roughly triangular section. The flint is a mottled grey/brown colour. The tool is still quite sharp and appears not to have been extensively rolled since loss/deposition. It was recovered from a rabbit burrow or material excavated by rabbits on the Wat's Dyke Path.
