Record ID: IARCH-11728C
Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
From Fulford et al. 1989, 221: A very slight ring made of sheet gold formed into a fine, tapering tube. Towards the back of the hoop it has been compressed into a squarish cross-section, expanding towards the bezel. This is set with part of a small, very worn, bead of green glass. The join in the tube which forms the hoop is visible on the upper surfaces of the shoulders, and the perforation in the bead can be seen through a break in the thin gold sheet at the side of the setting. The ring is not an obviously datable type, but the re-use of a glass bead for the setting would be more co…

Record ID: IARCH-205F27
Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
From Fulford et al. 1989, 221, 224: Two triangular fragments of thin gold sheet decorated with beaded wire borders, spiral volutes and small gold globules. The wire is very roughly and unevenly beaded. The bezel collar, which may belong to the same ring, is 16 by 14 mm, weighs 0.5 grammes, and is made of purer gold, 92.2% gold, 5.5% silver and 2.3% copper. Filigree volutes of this type, using beaded or plain wire, seem to be particularly characteristic of Late Roman rings in Britain, and also occur on the Continent. Two fragments from the shoulders of a ring, and a bezel collar. The fr…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
From Fulford et al. 1989, 224: Very fragmentary and mineralised remains of a plain silver setting containing a blue glass gem with the figure of a seated philosopher and part of the hoop and shoulder, decorated with three raised longitudinal ribs and stylized leaf decoration. The latter was not attached to the bezel and so may represent the remains of another ring. These analyses support the view that hoop and bezel fragments are from the same ring, though there cannot be any absolute proof. The condition of the ring makes it virtually impossible to identify the form closely. Weight ab…

Record ID: IARCH-8FB3ED
Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
From Fulford et al 1987, 280: The ring is an elaborate and flamboyant piece of jewellery with a large engraved gem and filigree hoop formed of beaded gold wire. It has been severely crushed before or during burial, but the detail of the goldwork remains undamaged. The bezel is a broad oval cell containing a dark blue onyx with a blue-grey upper layer, engraved with a satyr and a small cupid. The satyr is walking on tiptoe to the left holding out his left hand to a small cupid who reaches up to grasp it. In his left hand the satyr holds his crook (pedum), while over his left arm hangs…
