Probable casting waste of an unknown period with a noticeable copper content. The discovery of the four pieces of material in close proximity suggests they probably were associated with working something copper alloy with heat. Their distribution would suggest a date of deposition later in the suggested date range which is c1600 BC to c1970 AD (mid Bronze Age to Modern).  1 - Length 55mm, width 30mm, thickness 10mm, weight 33.57g. 2 - Length 47mm, width 35mm, thickness 8mm, weight 24.54g. 3 - Length 40mm, width 35mm, thickness 17mm, weight 56.81g. 4 - Length 31mm, width 26mm,…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone tool, possibly used as a scraper or whetstone. It is sub rectangular in shape but one of the long sides extends to form a point with the short side, the other short end is rounded. All four sides narrow to a point, which thus runs around the circumference of the object. It is not knapped but ground, the stone is possibly granite. It has an even brown patina with a granular appearance all over the surface. Dating this type of implement is difficult as whetstones were in use over a long period. An object with a similar 'bladed' side is PUBLIC-BD3717 and NLM-47EC…

A complete, worn and abraded copper-alloy disc, possibly a coin, though no indication of detail is now discernible on either side. Of uncertain date. While the principal composition of the object is copper-alloy, it appears to have lain next to an iron object thus gaining a brown patina on one side. It measures 18.78mm in diameter, 1.28mm in thickness, and weighs 1.50g.

Bronze Age to Early Medieval copper alloy bead or mount. It is undecorated, circular in plan with a central perforation, and oval in section. The diameter of the perforation is 9mm. Without doing a comparative analysis of the alloy used in their manufacture, dating of this sort of bead is problematic as they crop in the archaelogical record associated with sites dating from the Bronze Age to the Early Medieval. Other objects of all these periods have been found within the local area so the dating can't be tightened by association. Similar objects from the archaeological record are bot…

Copper alloy gaming piece, or possibly a weight. The object is roughly square in shape and flat. One face of the object is impressed with four circular shapes, as well as one semi-circle, which may have been a mistake. The four circles are placed roughly in each corner, although possibly done by eye rather than machine or measurement. The other face appears to be undecorated, although it is not completely smooth. The object has a deep green patina.

Lead weight of uncertain date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The object is oval with a circular perforation that does not extend all the way through. A hollowed circular section on the other side of the object may represent an abandoned attempt to extend this perforation. The object is dark grey in colour. It is 24.11mm in length, 21.44mm in width and 17.34mm in thickness. The perforation is 2.43mm in diameter. The object weighs 45.32g. It can be difficult to date lead weights without archaeological context. This example has no diagnostic features that would allow it to be more precisely dated.

It is 34.63mm in length and 14.09mm in width. It weighs 29.79g. This type of lead weight was crudely made and had multiple functions, including as fishing weights.
