Fragment of a weathered granite rotary quern, part of the upper stone which sat on a lower stone of similar circumference, around a central hole. The two stones were held together by a wooden spindle through the two holes. The upper stone was rotated over the base and grain placed between the stones so that it was ground. The granite is typical of weathered granite from moorland outcrops and contains pale felspars and quartz inclusions. The felspars are soft and are worked or weathered into hollows, while the quartz is hard and stands proud of the surface, creating a shearing actio…

Fragment of pudding stone, probably from a Roman quern stone. The fragment is irregular in shape but clearly has one deliberately flat edge, probably the grinding surfcae. It is now 104.5mm long, 57.86mm wide and 62.22mm thick. Pudding stone is a conglomerate of pebbles held together in a natural cement of silica and sand.

Mill or quern stone fragment, sandstone, most probably dating from the Roman period, although the fragment is too small to be certain. It most probably was a fragment of the upper half of the quern: part of the outer edge remains (centre image, upper edge of fragment) and it is sloping towards the centre, i.e. this fragment was part of the concave half of the quern. All edges and surfaces are very worn and only three original surfaces remain: the upper and lower as well as the outer surface; all the others are breaks. The upper surface (which would be the underside of the quern) displa…

Top half of a granite rotary quern. These objects are difficult to date - pre Roman querns were usually saddle querns, but rotary querns were used from Roman times until the 19th century when they were replaced by mills.

Large fragment of a rotary quern, made from dark red sand stone. Because of its shape it is suggested here that it is the lower half of the rotary quern. The central perforation is still visible and on one side of the sloping upper surface, it has a large, deep groove. Rotary querns are very difficult to date. They were an every-day household item and have been found in Roman as well as Medieval contexts. The quern was recorded at Penrith Finds Day, 14.06.05

Worked granite rotary quern stone. Only the top half remains. The central perforation is still in good condition although does show signs of wear. The underside of this half has a chipped edge and there is a ridge to indicate the location of the quern handle.

Fragment of a quern stone, probably a lower stone, made from lava. Lava querns were imported from Germany in the Roman and Early Medieval period. The quern is dressed on the grinding surface with concentric ridges that do not follow the circumference of the stone. The other side is not dressed but slopes down towards the outer edge.

Fragment of a lava quern stone, probably a lower stone. Lava querns were imported from Germany in the Roman and early Medieval period. This fragment comes from the outer edge of the stone. One side is finely dressed with triangular sections of parallel ridges. The other side is plain but also feels worn, with areas of loss. The fragment is of almost even thickness although the lower side may be slightly concave.

The object is probably a fragment of a quern stone. The stone appears to be ill sorted sandstone, which has fine and medium sized grains, with occasional voids. In plan the fragment is a sub-trapezoid, none of the edges are the true edge. One surface is very flat and worn, which indicates it is a quern stone. The other surface is a broken face, therefore the shape of the quern cannot be determined in profile. The quern could tentatively be dated as Roman when considering the other material which has come off the field. It weighs 335g.

Approximately half of the lower quern stone remains. The quern stone has a slightly conical shaped upper surface with a central vertical hole through the stone. The hole in profile is similar to an inverted funnel. On the upper surface of the stone there are linear grooves radiating from the centre of the stone. The lower face of the stone is not smooth but and is slightly convex. The stone is an old red sandstone from either the Bristol Channel or Forest of Dean.

a piece of grey lava quernstone, of probable Roman date. It is curved, with tool marks forming a rim (57mm wide) on the upper edge, and the estimated diameter is 420 mm, with approximately 30% of the stone extant. It is 60mm thick at the outside edge which is also tooled, tapering to 10mm at the opposite edge (being the centre of the complete quern). The quern is broken off on one side, at the point where it was socketed. The underside is slightly dished, showing signs of wear.It weighs 3440g.
