Four fragments from possibly three seperate greisen rotary querns dating to the Romano-British period. The fragments are triangular in plan and wedge shaped in section. The handle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The greisen stone is coarse with prominent mica flakes with ragged edges up to 7 mm across and coarser quartz grains up to 10 mm across set in a finer matrix of quartz and mica with black tourmaline inclusions. The fine-grained inclusion i…

A fragment of grey lava quern stone of possible Roman or later date, probably imported from the Rhine. The fragment is roughly rectangular in form, terminating on all sides in old breaks. Towards one narrow edge it has an expanded rim(?) that gives the entire fragment a sub-triangular profile. The interior grinding surface is relatively smooth with no evidence for ridges or similar. It measures 80.42mm in length, 65.09mm in width, 29.01mm in thickness and 178.51g in weight. This quern is possibly of Roman date, although a later, Medieval, date cannot immediately be ruled out.

A fragment from a Hertfordshire puddingstone quern, a join piece with a fragment previously recorded through the PAS as SF-026163. It is triangular in section, preserving parts of the curving outer surface and possibly at the point of the triangle a small area of the grinding surface, although this is now mostly missing due to old breaks. This fragment measures 99.20mm in length, 59.86mm in width, 80.04mm in thickness, and weighs 547g. Querns such as this are probably Roman-British in date, c.43-410 AD.

A fragment of the upper stone of a Roman rotary sandstone quern (AD 43-409). The fragment includes the outer edge but not the inner edge. The lower surface has 'peck' marks and is smoothed as a result of use. When complete, it would have been circular in plan and the outer diameter would have been about 370.0mm. Greyish brown overall, it is sub-rectangular in cross-section and the breaks are old. Length: 122.0mm; width: 98.0mm; thickness: 36.8mm. Weight: c. 644.0g.

Granite lower stone or base from a rotary quern with a central hole that would have contained the wooden staff or spindle to hold it to the upper stone of the quern which would have also been perforated centrally. The spindle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The stone is about 480 mm in diameter and about 230 mm in height at the hole or eye which is 40 mm in diameter and a complete perforation. Such perforations may have enabled the spindle to have been fixe…

A fragment (consisting of roughly one third) of the upper stone of a rotary hand mill or quern. The date of the quern is uncertain but probably dates from the Roman to Medieval periods. There is a sub circular recess on the upper face of the quern which would have acted as a socket for a long handle. The maximum diameter of the recess is approximately 15.6mm. The upper face of the quern is uneven. The reverse is flat apart from a sub rectangular recess next to the interior side of the quern. The quern is discoid in shape. It measures approximately 154.4mm in length. Width: 83.13mm. Th…

Two complete beehive quern stones tops of Roman date. The stones are domed with a fluted upper surface and central perforations. Both stones appear to have side perforations though these are extremely worn on one. Unmalted grain would have been poured into the vertical central perforation while the stone was turned by a handle projecting from the side perforations. The upper stone was held in place over the lower stone by a bridge or rynd of wood or metal - frequently iron - which is likely to account for the iron plug in one of these examples. Quern stones have been used since th…

A fragment of drak brown stone with high percentage og quartzite and grit inclusions. Rectangular in section, and trapezoidal in plan due to the breaks, the lowers srface is uneven and broken, while the upper surface is smooth and slightly concave. The basic form of the upper surface and nature fo the stone suggest that this may be a fragment of quern stone of Roman date. Several quernstones can be found on this database for comparison.

Nearly complete upper half of a Roman beehive quern, probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The stone is very heavy and dome-shaped with a fluted upper surface. Only one small piece from the outside is missing, but the central perforation as well as the side perforation are still present. Unmalted grain would have been poured into the vertical perforation whilst there would have been a wooden handle in the horizontal hole for turning the quern stone on top of the lower stone. The rotary quern used circular motions to grind the material, meaning both the quern and the handstone were …

A fragment of a rotary quernstone, probably of Roman date. The piece does not appear to retain any portion of its outer side. Both surfaces show evidence of having been shaped the upper surface, worn smooth, has a 'pecked' appearace from the shaping process, while the underside bears several parallel grooves. The thickness of the stone decreases towards the outside. The material employed is an even-grained, coarse gritstone of uncertain origin. The object measures 110mm long, 95mm wide (remaining diameter) and up to 32mm thick. It weighs 434.7g.
