Roman vessel; body sherd of probable early Roman pottery. The sherd is of varying thicknesses, suggesting hand shaping, and seems to have been fired-blackened on its outer surface. It has a pale orange, oxidised fabric with a cream-white exterior surface. The fabric has a few, tiny voids. There are occasional large, stone inclusions and some tiny, colourless crystalline inclusions as well as many tiny, brown-red non-crystalline inclusions. Length 88.6mm, width 51.7mm, thickness 10.5mm, weight 48.26g

Rim sherd of a thin walled Severn Valley Ware earthenware dating to the late Roman period (150 – 410 AD). This sherd is worn and probably comes from the rim of either a storage jar or cooking pot. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with a number of angular and sub angular quartz (white and rose coloured), grit, and brown coloured ironstone inclusions. The fabric colour is a mid buff orange and the outer colour is a lighter mid orange. The diameter of the vessel can be estimated from the curvature of the rim; this is approximately 380mm (38cm). There is not enough of t…

Sherd of very worn courseware pottery possibly dating from the Roman period (45-400 AD) or medieval period (1300-1450). The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub angular quartz, grit, and iron stone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. It is broadly similar to the Severn Valley wares of the Roman period. The fabric colour is a mid orange colour. There is not enough of the sherd surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape or diameter of the vessel. As the sherd is relatively thick it may be part of a str…

Rim sherd of a large Severn Valley Ware storage jar dating from the early - middle Roman period 43-200 AD. The fabric is a very soft unglazed earthen ware with small granular sand / silica inclusions. The fabric colour is a light red orange. From the rim of the sherd a diameter for the mouth of the storage jar can be estimated; this would be approximately 21cm. All of the breaks on the sherd are relatively old and worn. The size of the sherd and the lack of modern breaks suggest that this has been removed from a primary context possibly a rubbish pit. This is highly likely as i…

Three decorated sherds of Samian type Roman pottery probably dating to the 2nd century AD (120 - 220 AD). All three sherds are made of the same fabric; however the decoration on each is different suggesting that they are from three different vessels. The fabric of each is a hard and fine grained with mica limestone and black iron ore inclusions. The fabric is assessed by observation of worn rather than fresh breaks. The slip / glaze on all three sherds is similar being relatively thick and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherds have been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal th…
