Object type: WRITING SLATE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of slate, with incised lines on both faces; one face has a grid of squares, each 7mm wide (approximately 1/4 inch). The other face has parallel lines, 9 mm apart. This is probably part of a writing slate, used in schools and work places from the 18th century. The lined side would have been used for handwriting practice, the grid for arithmetic or drawing. The fragment is roughly rectangular, measuring 37 mm by 34 mm, it is 4 mm thick and weighs 10.7 g. A similar item is described in record BERK-C1D811

Probably complete cast copper alloy possible Window fitting or fitting for other household item. The fitting is flat in section and roughly semi-circular in plan with a short scrolled knop projecting outwards to either end of the edge of the semi-circle. This edge of the semi-circle is not straight but scalloped with the two scrolled ends following the pattern of this undulation. The main semi-circular part of the fitting has two sub-oval holes side-by-side. Although no good published parallel has been found it has been suggested that it is similar to known post-Medieval window fitt…

Post medieval silver 'bosun's whistle fragment, pipe only. Gilded silver "bosun's" whistle fragment. Slightly tapering sheet tube with two applied double-grooved collars, one at the widest end and one at the centre. The wider half of the tube is decorated with four spiralling grooves giving it a cabled appearance; the remainder of the tube is plain. On the underside of the wider end of the tube is a broken circular loop; a handle would have extended from this loop and been fixed at two other points (indicated by scars) on the narrow half of the tube. A hollow sphere would have been …

Silver "bosun's" whistle. Slightly tapering sheet tube with two applied transverse double-grooved fillets, one at the widest end and one at the centre; at the narrower end is a hollow cast sphere which has a circular hole (diameter 5mm) cut at the junction with the tube - air blown through the tube would pass over this finger-hole. Around the sphere is an applied flat band decorated with three raised ribs; it runs from the far edge of the finger-hole to the underside of the tube. Medieval lead object fragment, possibly the bulb from a boatswains' or pilgrims' whistle. Three-dimensional hollow object, originally domed or sub-spherical and with a suspension loop, is it now broken at the 'base' (opposite the suspension loop) and squashed flat. The surviving surface is decorated with two ring and dots, flanking a longitudinal herringbone line. The other surface is damaged and distorted but what survives appears to have been decorated in the same way (can make out two ring-and dots). There is no wear on the loop. The casting line runs down the sides of the loop and …

Lead object, probably a post medieval whistle, in the shape of a key. Bent into a 'W' shape. Head in the form of a lis with a cylindrical projection from the central lobe - the projection has a small circular perforation, which is presumably a blow-hole. In the centre of the lis on one surface is raised open cylinder, which may also be perforated, although this is not clear - this may have acted as a sound-hole. At the base of the head is a linear projection - it is not clear what this is for, or if it is broken. Double plain collar at the junction of the head and shaft. The shaft is h…

An incomplete, lead alloy whistle, in the form of a steam train (c. 1850 - 1950). The whistle is formed from a cylinder narrowing at the plowing end to form a D-shaped hole at the rear. At the opposite end (the front of the steam train) is a round cap with the remains of a suspension loop at its centre. There is a complete steam dome in situ on the top and, in front of it, the remains of a chimney. On the lower portion of either side of the body of the train are two sets of three wheels, one side is missing all the wheels, while there is one complete, and one nearly complete on the ot…

TREASURE CASE 2014 T196: Incomplete silver whistle of post-medieval date. The whistle has been formed from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These three components are separated by two collars of spiral coiled silver wire (often known as 'cannetille') with a central core of silver wire of the same thickness. These collars are soldered on to the sheet metal body of the whistle. The mouthpiece is incomplete, having lost most of its silver tubing in antiquity. The central body of the …

A fragment of a probable pendant whetstone of uncertain date. A fine grained dark stone, roughly rectangular in plan, with a hole for suspension from a cord or thong drilled at one end. The stone was probably considerably longer, it now terminates in a clean break 26 mm along from the suspension hole. One surface is very smooth and has a curve; thinning towards the break. This was probably due to the whetstone being in use for some time and may have contributed to the break. Wear around the hole also suggests prolonged use. The object is 21.5 mm wide, 37 mm long, 8.9 mm thick ta…

Medieval weight; Cast lead weight of bell shape: The weight is essentially a circular cone, although it flares out towards the bottom and is flattened at the top. It has a curved suspension loop at the top, formed from a strap of lead, and is pierced in the centre of the base. The lead has a white patina, of varying thickness. Height 41.3mm, width (“diameter”) 33.4mm, weight 185.3g Lead weights are difficult to date due the…
