A lead alloy probable brooch fragment which is probably from the mid Early Medieval period. The fragment is a sub rectangular flat plate with one end rounded, and the other end broken with the majority of the brooch missing. The fragment is divided into two panels by a transverse raised bar. There seems to be a plain border round each panel, and interlace patterns within. The reverse is plain and flat apart from two lugs at the rounded end. These were probably originally pierced to hold the pin bar, but are now corroded and the bar and pin are missing. It is probably part of a middle S…

A cast, lead alloy, openwork artefact, possibly a brooch, of uncertain date. It is oval in shape and is pierced with an openwork lattice design. There is a central, raised dot and a series of fourteen raised dots spaced equidistantly around the rim. On the reverse, at one end of the oval is a small, integral loop. At the other end are the remains of what might possibly have been a catchplate. There is no pin remaining. It is 35.2mm long, 31.6mm wide and 6mm thick. It weighs 11.48gm. It has become slightly distorted over time. There are some annular brooches which seem similar on page …

Incomplete lead-alloy disc brooch of probable 11th-century date. Just over half the brooch survives, with a deep crack in the middle. The surviving part measures 39 x 23mm and the original diameter was probably c. 39mm. It measures 7mm in height and weighs 7.6g.
The brooch has a stepped profile, with a narrow flanged beaded border. The centre is raised above this border, with an angled, undecorated area forming the step. The flat centre has relief decoration of a central boss surrounded by a double ridge, the inner slightly bolder. Springing from the outer ridge are two of what may…

Possibly Lead Alloy or Base Silver, possibly with gemstone.
Possible Disc Brooch. Cast flattened plano-convex flan with a central perforation circa 3mm square, with hammered or stamped motifs on both sides. On the convex side there is a cruciform arrangement of finely billeted panels with strings of beads, rays and panels radiating between the arms. On the other side a rectangular cell of circa 4mm square, immediately adjacent to the central aperture, appears to retain a small white crystal or quartz stone. This lies off-centre within a finely beaded circle. The edges of the object…

A cast lead-alloy disc brooch of the post-Medieval period.
The brooch is decorated in relief, but the choice of lead alloy has meant that there is little crisp detail in the decoration. There is a simple band as an outer border, with the field decorated with three figures (a man, a bird, and a beast) with a P in the middle.
The reverse has lugs to take a hingepin and the base of the catchplate.

Very fine lead alloy disc brooch. The brooch face is circular and raised, circa 25mm in diameter, and flares rearwards to circa 32mm in diameter. The brooch is hollow when viewed from the reverse. The central flat panel of the brooch is openwork, comprising an irregular, tightly banded interlace pattern of probable animal parts. There are two triangular panels on the frame edge each containing three pellets. The edge of the central panel is beaded, as is the outer perimeter of the brooch. There are two integral D-shaped perforated lugs on the outer perimeter, perhaps for attachment; t…

The border consists of a raised line with a band of raised pellets on either side, larger ones on the outside. Openwork, domed circular brooch (bent in two). Concentric rings with central beaded cross and struts saltirewise; beading on border. Compare NLM-A6CCD1, NLM395, etc, on this database. Weetch type 13.D, with parallels in 12th- and 13th-century contexts in York and Beverley; apparently a northern English type. Weetch dates it to the 11th century onwards.

An incomplete cast lead alloy object, possibly a fragment of a brooch dating from the early Early Medieval period (AD 400 - 600). The brooch is possibly a small square-headed type, but this identification is uncertain due to the fragmentary nature of the object. The fragment is roughly rectangular in plan with two original edges at a right angle, forming the outer edge of the object, and two broken edges. It is slightly bent and distorted, this was probably caused when it was broken. The front face of the object has relief decoration consisting of three equally spaced lines running pe…

An incomplete, lead-alloy, late Anglo-Saxon, or Anglo-Scandinavian, disc brooch. The brooch is circular and is slightly domed on its front and concave on the reverse. The front is decorated with relief moulding, consisting of a circumference of raised pellets and a non-geometric design within it. The area of the central design is subject to a large amount of white, powdery corrosion, probably due to the deterioration of the tin content of the alloy (commonly referred to as 'tin pest'), and is difficult to interpret.
On the back of the brooch, the integrally-moulded catch plate surv…

A lead brooch of Weetch's type 4.C, dating to the early medieval period, c. AD 900 to 1000.
The object was originally circular and flat, but it has been folded and bent, probably through post-depositional processes. The back of the object has the lugs and pin catch which would have formed part of the mechanism. The pin is missing. The front of the object has cast decoration with a central raised pellet with two collars surrounding it. Around the central motif is a double lozenge shape with concave sides. At each point is a small rectangle with a row of pellets within. All of this d…

Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast fragment from a flat plate with part of a relief design on its display face; three adjacent pellets of which one is larger than the others and a curved line above them with uncertain extensions and intersecting a cabled border. Patinated overall. This fragmentary motif might derive at its earliest, from a Viking-Age plate brooch displaying Christian symbols; or a cheap medieval brooch; or a pilgrim badge of an indeterminate cult centre - oriented as illustrated, the eye of faith might discern Christ hanging on the cross to be the subject. Sugg…

An early-medieval to medieval lead-alloy shield brooch dating from AD 1050 - AD 1175, of Weetch type 26. The brooch is an elongated drop shape, or kite shaped.
