A copper alloy disc of a later Early Medieval ansate brooch. The object is a disc from one end of an ansate brooch with one decorated face. The decoration consists of cells which would originally have been infilled with enamel/glass/coloured paste. Corrosion within the cells suggests some colour differentiation. There is no obvious organisation of the cells other than that they follow a circular pattern with a cross in the centre. The underside is undecorated and has a corroded lug. One edge of the disc has a break where the bow connected to the disc.

Part of a copper alloy circular brooch which is Early Medieval in date. The brooch is a flat disc with a raised ropework rim. The front of the disc and the rim is gilt. It is broken and the surviving fragment is 18.3mm long, 12.9mm wide and 5.8mm thick. There is a hole in the centre of the disc through which fits a small copper alloy and undecorated rivet which has also survived. The reverse of the disc is plain copper alloy with a dark brown patina. A double pin lug survives but not the pin. The brooch probably dates from the Early Anglo-Saxon period.

Scandinavian copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is decorated with an openwork Jellinge-style design of an interlacing animal (see NMS-7446E3 and ESS-4D7A85 for other examples of this style). Early medieval brooch: A Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking Age copper alloy cloisonné disc brooch with six (possibly originally seven) lobes and enamelled decoration. The projecting lobes have sunken terminals, presumably originally inlaid with enamel or glass. This technique is known in several other brooches of this type, and is thought to imitate more costly gold jewllery, which was often inlaid with perals and gemstones.
The body of the brooch consists of a flat baseplate and raised central collar, the latter describing the edge of the ornamented central area. Sitting on top of the coll…

Small cast copper alloy bow brooch, with sub-triangular headplate and footplate. The brooch is similar to examples of small equal-armed brooches, although this example is not symmetrical, the headplate being slightly shorter than the footplate. It is thus also very similar to examples of miniature radiate-headed brooches, and perhaps sits somewhere between the two types. The reverse has remains of the iron pin and spring surviving, possibly with traces of mineralised textile preserved in the corrosion products.

A cast copper-alloy ansate brooch, with an arched back with an equally sized fan-shaped terminal on either end. The arched back of the brooch is decorated with three prominent ridges. Below the terminals there is a catchplate on one side and a double lug on the other. The remains of an iron pin can also been seen, but is heavily corroded.
Ansate brooches are in origin a Frankish type, used in France from the 7th century onwards. They do not appear in England until the 8th century, and they appear to go out of use in the 10th century.

It is lozenge-shaped, slightly longer than wide, with one of the narrower, more pointed corners now missing and the metal at the break bent. From the photo, the material of the rivets is uncertain; there is iron corrosion around, especially on the reverse, and it is possible either that the rivets are of iron or that they attached a pin made from iron. There is also a circular hole neatly cut through the decoration at one o…

Early medieval brooch; Incomplete cast copper alloy disc brooch of probable 9th century date. The brooch is formed of a flat, circular plate cast with a design with roundels and indications of interlace. The artefact consists of two fragments of the plate which fit together, one of which seems more worn than the other. Unfortunately the back of the fragments cannot be closely examined due to the adhesive which has been used to hold them together, but there is no indication that any of the pin or pin mounting survives.
From the existing fragment it can be postulated that the original…
