Incomplete cast copper alloy gilded Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch. The item has a plain flared rim and a central rosette surrounded by a relief design referred to as 'devolved guilloche' which is essentially a series of stylised interwoven bands or ribbons represented by angular blocks flowing in an anti-clockwise direction. The brooch has been bent and fragmented so that roughly two thirds of the item remains. There are slight traces of the original pin attachment on the reverse. Two brooches of the same design, also found in Oxfordshire are recorded in the Ashmolean Museum's, 'A Sum…

An Early Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small long brooch, dating to around the 6th century. At this time, relatively crude imitations of larger brooches were produced, and these are termed 'small long brooches' (Hattatt 1985: 211). This is a good example of the type, measuring 51mm long, with a maximum head width of 24mm, and a bow thickness of 3.4mm. It weighs 11g. The head is roughly square and undecorated, measuring 24mm by 22m, while the bow is short (truncated at 29mm) and gently curved at the top, with a straighter, thin section close to the (now lost) foot. There is a small rai…

An Early Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small square-headed brooch brooch, dating to the 6th century. Although nicely cast, its incised line ornament is rather rudimentary, such that it might be classed as a small long brooch, copying the small square-headed form. The reverse retains a pair of lugs that would have made up the hinge mechanism, but the iron pin is now represented only by corrosion product. The brooch measures 64mm long, and has a maximum width of 28.8mm. The head is subrectangular (22mm wide, and 19mm deep). The brooch's maximum thickness is 3.1mm, though the attachment …

A copper alloy Early Medieval domed disc brooch. The brooch has a diameter of 26.1mm and is 8.5mm thick. It has a plain border and a design in relief of a Jellinge-style animal with interlace. On the reverse the double pin lug and catchplate survive, and there is another projecting lug which is too corroded to see if it was pierced. The pin does not survive. The brooch is in very good condition and has a deep green patina with lighter areas of slight corrosion. The brooch probably dates from the later part of the Early Medieval period; 850 - 1066 AD. Jane Kershaw has identified thi…

Part of a copper alloy circular brooch which is Early Medieval in date. The brooch is a flat disc with a raised ropework rim. The front of the disc and the rim is gilt. It is broken and the surviving fragment is 18.3mm long, 12.9mm wide and 5.8mm thick. There is a hole in the centre of the disc through which fits a small copper alloy and undecorated rivet which has also survived. The reverse of the disc is plain copper alloy with a dark brown patina. A double pin lug survives but not the pin. The brooch probably dates from the Early Anglo-Saxon period.

Scandinavian copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is decorated with an openwork Jellinge-style design of an interlacing animal (see NMS-7446E3 and ESS-4D7A85 for other examples of this style). On the reverse there are the remains of the pin lug and catchplate. The pin is missing. There is also part of the suspension loop which the wearer could have passed a chain through to wear the brooch as a pendant. Jane Kershaw has identified this as Scandinavian - a Jellinge-style disc brooch, Jansson Type I A1 (Jansson in Arwidsson1984; Kershaw 2009). There is a close parallel from Cambridge…
