A large and complete tranchet type axehead of Mesolithic date. It has patinated and stained surfaces that are mixed grey in colour on one face and mixed brown on the other. The axe is roughly struck, plano-convex in form and with many heavy, large flake scars. The sides and butt end are steeply flaked and the cutting edge has an irregular, convex form. There are areas of cortex visible on both faces, as well as minor plough damage that in places reveals the unpatinated dark grey/black flint beneath the surface. An incomplete, snapped flint tranchet axe of Mesolithic to Neolithic date, struck from a pale yellow/orange flint. One end survives intact, probably the butt end or the unfinished blade end, snapped towards the centre due to old breaks and a flaw in the stone. It is oval shaped in section, bifacially worked with multiple flake scars on both face and limited crude edge retouch. Orange staining on both faces indicates plough damage. It measures 60.50mm in length, 49.31mm in width, 22.39mm in thickness and 71.09g in weight. This is an incomplete struck flint axe of either Mesolithic or N…

Mesolithic flint tranchet axe. 172mm long, blade 45mm wide, butt 35mm wide, maximum thickness 27mm. Chocolate-coloured patination/staining. Axe is in pristine condition with only one very minor modern chip. Fully flaked, with no surviving cortex. Blade has been sharpened by the removal of a large transverse flake and there is some sign of subsequent edge damage.

Mesolithic tranchet axehead. The main blade flakes are removed transversely and it would originally have been hafted in a wooden handle. The axehead is complete but relatively small, and made of a pale grey/brown flint. It is bifacially worked with a pointed butt and a broad, rounded cutting edge formed by the removal of single transverse flakes. Tranchet axes are in many ways better than the later (Neolithic) flaked and polished axes in that the resharpening is simple and rapid, making it a far more utilitarian tool.
