Small Incomplete, copper alloy Colchester derivative rearhook Roman brooch. The spring, pin, and most of the catch-plate are missing. The rear of the left-hand wing (as viewed from the underside) has the characteristic witness marks of spring attachment. The hook at the head of the brooch that originally retained the chord is now just a stub. Heavy wear and corrosion inhibits the determination of any original decoration. Mackreth, D. F. Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain V1 (2011) p.60; comments that rearhook brooches were exclusively Icenian. Circa 1st century AD.
