A fragment of thin copper-alloy sheet, now roughly square (42 x 32.5 x 0.7 mm), with three of its four edges broken. The fragment is curved, and if the curve were extended, it would give a maximum diameter of 120 mm. The upper edge is the only original edge, and this is undecorated; below, the strip is decorated with repoussé dots arranged in pairs. There is a horizontal line of paired dots below the rim, and what is probably a lattice design below this. The dots are convex on the exterior and concave on the reverse. The surface has traces of a dark green patina. At first, the …

Probable copper alloy lid from an Anglo-Saxon workbox. The lid is circular thin sheet of copper alloy with a central hole, containing a suspension loop. The loop consists of a single oval strip of copper alloy looped over at the top, threaded through the hole and then splayed on the reverse to secure it to the lid. Attached to the suspension loop is another small strip of copper alloy looped through the suspension loop, perhaps forming the first link in a chain. There is a further hole to either side of the central hole although it is not certain whether these are areas of damage. …

Late Saxon polyhedral weight of Scandinavian form, a cube with each corner cut off, i.e. with fourteen facets. On each of the six large facets are four annulets with a frame of punched dots. Weighing 3.01g / 46.4 grains. This is very close both to a postulated Anglo-Saxon unit of 3.1g (Kruse 1992, 86), and to two pennyweights (48 grains, one tenth of an ounce Troy). 7.6 - 7.7mm³. Similar polyhedral weights have been found in Heckingham and Seething. Mid 9th - 10th century.

A copper-alloy polyhedral weight of Scandinavian type, in the shape of a cube with the corners cut off. The weight has six stamped annulets on its six square sides, set within an incised frame. Each smaller, triangular surface also has a stamped annulet. Polyhedral weights are relatively common finds at Scandinavian trading sites such as Birka (Sweden) and Kaupang (Norway). A large number have also been recorded from the Viking winter camp of Torksey, Lincolnshire (see PAS 'Find-ID' DENO-92F202; DENO-9338F5 and DENO-934697). Their discovery in England is almost certainly associated…

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval weight, late 9th- 10th century in date. Hiberno-Norse/ Viking in style. It is circular in plan and has been cast. It has decoration on the upper face which has been cast integrally with the weight. It consists of a triskele motif which is concave. Within the arms of the triskele are small crescents. Around the edge is a single grooved line. The upper face was possibly silvered orginally and traces of this now remain. There is the remains of a possible casting sprue on one edge, a small circular protrusion. The weight has a mainly dark green pati…

Cast copper alloy weight dating to the Early Medieval period. The object is sub-circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The upper surface is decorated with five running spirals within a grooved border. The reverse of the object is decorated with three ring-and-dot decorations which are unevenly spaced. Some signs of corrosion can be seen on the lower surface. The object has a dark green patina. Weights such as this are usually attached to a block of lead. Although the object measures 5.98mm in thickness it appears to have originally been a mount from a shrine. It can be d…

Late Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian weight made from copper alloy, possibly with an iron core. The weight is roughly globular, with two flattened facets. Both flattened faces are decorated with the same motif. The motif has an incised circle containing an off-centred crescent. Around the external perimeter of the circle are punched crescents. The metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. This type of 'truncated sphere' weight is one of the more common Viking-age weights, being found in numbers in London, York and Scandianavia. It is thought that they are ultimately derived from Arab…

A cast copper alloy weight of possible Early Medieval date. It is sub circular in plan, with some straight sides, and rectangular in section. It is 19.8mm in diameter and 8.9mm thick. It weighs 19.59gm. (0.691oz). There are purposeful markings on both faces, consisting of a variety of grooves and possible faint relief markings, which are hard to interpret. Although it is not obviously of any particular date, odd copper-alloy weights can be found in the Viking period, and so it has been tentatively dated to then, supported by other Early Medieval finds from this area. Compare SF6604.

Copper alloy possible weight: Irregularly cast cube, slightly tapered, with chamfered arises on its long sides; at its broader end is a large feature resembling a ring and dot, but standing in relief rather than being incised; another, less well-defined, feature stands proud at the other end. The relief at its ends prevent the object standing on either, and probably rule out a function as a playing piece. The mass might suggest this to have represented two Viking Age units of 4.43gms, as used for silver bullion transactions. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1050. Height/Length…
