A core tool, worked on a nodule of unflawed brown flint. It is here described as an adze because it has a 'D' section and the butt has been thinned; both implying that it is hafted as an adze. However it may have been used in the hand as a pick. Mesolithic and Early Neoliothic tools of both descriptions are known and this tool fits Butler(2005) description of a 'Hassocks adze', found in a limited distribution south of the Thames. This tool has had 2 successive large flakes removed longitudinally to leave a flat side. This has been used as a platform to refine the pointed end, removing…

A large biface of cream patinated flint. It is elongated and of peaked 'D' section so appears to have been a Mesolithic adze. The plan is of convex and symmetrical working tip with finer shallow flaking to give the shape and sharpness. There is no sign of a sharpening flake scar from the side unlike the more usual 'Tranchet axe', but non tranchet forms are also known in The Mesolithic. There is blunting and abrasion from use with a notch developed on the right side of the blade. The left margin is complete with large finishing soft hammer struck flake scars and heavy abrasion to not cu…

An incomplete cast copper alloy adze of uncertain date. It is subrectangular in section and in plan and tapered in profile. The end tapers towards a bevelled edge and curves slightly downwards. There is a large oval perforation in the centre . From the perforation, the sides expand towards working edge. There is an old break, which runs at a 45 degree angle from the side of the adze near the upper part of the perforation towards the working edge. It is in fair condition, with a light green patina. It measures 59.22 mm L x 23.58 mm W x 7.75 mm TH x 15.98 mm DIA (of perforation) a…

A Neolithic knapped flint adze, dating to between (3500 BC - 2100 BC) The adze is ovoid in plan with a a lozenge cross section which becomes more rounded towards the butt. It has parallel sides, a slightly rounded butt and an angular almost riangular blade. The surface of the adze is covered in removals with scars and some impact ripples present where flakes were removed from the surface; it is possible there may be more recent damage, particularly at the butt end, but it is difficult to tell to what degree. The flaking is covering, moslty stepped (and some sparse scaled) and is angled…
