Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle loop, probably of Early Medieval date. The plate and tongue are missing. There are signs of stress from bending on the reverse of the object. The object is D-shaped in section. The face has been chip-carved with angled notches on the outer edges. The inner edge of the loop has six evenly-spaced, slightly larger notches, three on each side of the platform-notch for the pin. Just before both the breaks on the loop are cuts, removing the curve of the object's face and creating a rectangular section. This was possibly intended to accommodate the plate.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy sheet mount with four off-set perforations for rivets. The mount could possibly have been a side plate for a comb, part of a knife handle, or other furniture mount. The object is decorated with incised lines; there are two rows of squares with punched (but not perforated) centres. To either side of these rows are parallel lines; outside of the parallel lines are zig-zag marks, made with a small-bladed tool that has been struck, pivoted, and struck again, forming a distinctive mark that is heavier where the corner of the tool met the sheet.

Cast copper alloy horse pendant suspension bar. The object is badly corroded. The bar is 65.5mm wide. At either end of the bar are perforations for iron rivets, of which traces of one are still apparent. There are decorative knops at each terminal of the bar. The suspension loop is visible as an integral U-shaped tag on the lower side of the bar. This would have been an ovoid tag, folded behind the bar to form a loop. The back part of the loop has been broken, leaving this U-shaped tag. The only traces of decoration are two lines shown in relief at either end of the bar, inside from t…

A cast copper alloy object of uncertain function, possibly dating from the early-medieval period. Cast copper alloy mount. The object is in the shape of an acorn, with an upper tag at an angle to the ovoid body of the mount. The upper half of this ovoid part has a textured surface, representing the upper shell of the acorn. This is separated from the lower half of the body by two horizontal, parallel incised lines. The lower half of the body is then smooth and otherwise undecorated. There are two integral rivets on the reverse, one at each point of the oval. This object was probably for mounting onto a strap, either a personal belt or a harness strap.
