Roman votive axe; cast lead axehead of probable Roman date. The axe is of the perforated type which, at full size, would have had a haft fixed through the middle of it. This miniature copy in lead has an iron-rich substance in the perforation. The lead has a thick, even, white patina over its surface. It is likely that this miniature axehead had a votive function and similar items are known from Roman ritual contexts, although the iron in the hole is unusual. Length 20.9mm, width 8.4mm, thickness 7.7mm, weight 4.81g A similar tiny lead axehead is recorded on the database as SUR-5…

Incomplete knapped and polished Neolithic flint axe head. The axe is missing part of the cutting edge and all of the butt end but based on the cross-section and angle of tapering is probably of the thick-butted type or possibly of the elongated type of axe. The axe is lenticular with facetted sides in section. Butler (Butler, C. 2005 Prehistoric Flintwork Tempus, p.145) notes that those axes with facetted sides tend to be less than 200mm long. The axe has a rich cream-beige patina with traces of cortex remaining on both faces. Butler (Butler, C. 2005 Prehistoric Flintwork Te…

A possible Neolithic (c.4000-c.2350 BC) axe haft made of deer antler. Overall the object measures 296mm long, 74mm wide and 50mm thick. Dr Kevin leahy says: 'It could be an axe haft, someone seems to have gone to the trouble of hollowing out the cancellous interior of the antler to form a socket which has the right sort of section. I know of axes being placed in antler sockets mounted on wooden hafts from the Neolithic Lakeside villages in Switzerland but nothing from the UK. I am a bit worried by the straight cut termination at the distal end of the antler beam as I don't know ho…

Incomplete ground and polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The rounded narrowed butt and mid-section of the axe survive with the remaining mid-section and cutting edge lost due to an old break. The axe is a tapered rectangle in plan, flaring outwards towards the, now missing, cutting edge, and is a pointed oval in cross-section, both side-to-side and, although truncated, also along its length. Both faces of the axe have chips, more invasively on one face, the weathering of these chips suggests various dates of occurence with some being relatively recent based on the sharpness…

Partially polished small flint axe of Neolithic date.  The flint is of pale orange-brown colour.  The axe is lenticular or double convex in section and thin butted in shape with the broader blade end tapering towards the butt.  The axe has been edge ground meaning that the blade third of the whole object only has been polished, the main body and butt have been left in their knapped state.  The blade edge has obviously undergone later retouch to re-sharpen the cutting edge. Following this retouch the axe was not then repolished.  One side of the blade is flatter in profile than th…
