Iron Age chariot fitting; Chariot lynch pin with cast copper alloy loop terminal and remains of iron pin bar. Also found in association with a long, copper alloy dowel which seems to fit through the lynch pin. Dated to the early 1st century AD
The main piece of the lynch pin has a broad, iron shaft which is quite corroded but which seems to be roughly circular in cross section. This shaft ends at a broad, domed, copper alloy terminal which has a narrow circular hole passing right through it. The terminal ends in a loop, running parallel to the hole mentioned above. Iron Age harness fitting; Fragment of cast copper alloy terret ring inlaid with red enamel, dating to the early 1st century AD. The fragment includes one of the ‘collars’ of the terret ring (the terminals which would have enclosed the narrower bar for attaching the terret to the yoke of the chariot) and the lower section of one side of the ring itself. Iron Age fastener; Cast copper alloy toggle fastener dating to the late Iron Age or possibly the early Roman period. The fastener is formed of a small, hollow cylinder of copper alloy with flat, circular terminals. The cylinder narrows just before the terminals and has an incised line around its centre. A thin band of the metal has been pulled out at the back of the cylinder to form an attachment loop, leaving an oval hole behind the loop.
Many similar examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Compare, for instance, ESS-CC8296, HESH-786D48 and BH-94DC85

Roman cosmetic implement; Cast copper alloy ‘mortar’ from a cosmetic grinder set. Small, narrow, shallow dish to hold cosmetic powder for grinding with a complementary ‘pestle’. The dish narrows at one end to a short handle for holding between two fingers. The handle flares at the end, in the vertical plane, and has a two-pronged terminal. This, together with the shape of the dish, gives the artefact a fish-like shape, with the dish as the body of the fish and the handle as its tail. Copper alloy penannular brooch of Fowler type C and dated to the 1st century BC – 1st century AD. The brooch is formed of a band of copper-alloy, of oval cross section, which has been bent round into a broad, open oval shape. The band does not meet and the terminals at either end of the band are formed by flattening the metal and rolling it up on itself. The pin is still present and is formed of a single flat piece of copper alloy, curled around the band of the brooch at one end and shaped to a rough point at the other end, where it rests on the opposite side of the brooch.

Roman brooch; incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of 1st century date. The brooch has a long, simple, tapering bow and the remains of tiny, flat wings. The line of the catchplate can be seen at the back of the foot of the brooch and the remains of the pin spring are present behind the head. The brooch is very abraded and has been bent round into a curve.
