Carved stone head, possibly from an ecclesiastical building of uncertain date, but likely to be from the later medieval period (c. 1100-1300AD). The stone is greyish sandstone and appears to represent the bust, possibly of an angel, with a stylised wing folded across the chest. The features of the face are quite crudely executed. The eyes are an oval shaped outline with a circular hole for the pupil. The nose is a simple crudely cut rectangle whilst the downturned mouth is a slot cut into the stone. It is unclear if the feature below the mouth opening is intended to represent a l…

The object is a carved stone sculpture of a probable boar or pig. A close comparison has not, so far, been found, therefore the date is not certain. However, Martin Henig has commented in correspondence that he doesn’t see why it is not Roman, and mentions a boar discovered in Bath, Wiltshire (Henig, M. The Art of Roman Britain). The stone the object is carved from is an igneous rock, which has been very weathered. The object was probably carved from a weathered pebble, and not a fragment of rock taken immediately from a larger portion. The stone is a medium coarse grained …

A carved stone head, often loosely referred to as a 'Celtic' head. 'Celtic' heads are found in some numbers in Britain, the great majority of which, including this one, are un-dateable. A date range of 600 BC - AD 1900 is therefore possible. The head has an oval flat face with convex lentoid eyes. The nose is long and flattened, expanding slightly in width towards the nostrils, but the lower nose is damaged. The lips are also damaged, but are closed and a little downturned. There are no ears nor hair depicted, but the carving has a smooth rounded pate. The rear of the head is rou…

Fragment of a marble sculpture of uncertain date, possibly Roman. The fragment is roughly oblong, with apparent breaks on all edges and is of inconsistent thickness. The front exhibits a female figure standing left, carved in high relief. The figure has an elaborate hairstyle consisting of a thick plait coiled across the forehead and tapering to the neck. Behind are four large transverse waves or plaits of hair. Between the plait and waves are a series of small waves and coils drawn back into a coiled bun at the nape of the neck. The face exhibits exaggerated, cartoonish features: a l…

A worked stone of the Roman period, dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries. The stone depicts a probably female head in the Romano-British style, with a head on a neck in relief on a rectangular base. There is no background panel behind the head, with the upper figural portion being sub-triangular in shape with a flat(ish) front face and a gently sloping reverse. The face is relatively flat with eyes and nose in low relief on a U-shaped head in very stark relief. Damage below the nose has removed the mouth to the jaw. The stone has weathered, but there is some evidence for defined ears t…

An inscribed stone dating to the Early-Medieval period. The stone is sub-trapezoidal in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It is incomplete, the edges are worn and it now has a greyish white patina. The current extremity measurements of the stone are 15.5 cm (height), 23 cm (length) and 7 cm (thickness). Three faces survive, all in abraded and damaged form. One face carries an inscription written in Latin lettering. To the right of the inscription is an incised line forming a border. At the top left corner is another possible horizontal border. Most of the left face of the stone h…

Fragment of a sculpture dating to the Early Medieval period. The top of the stone is rounded and although worn appears to be an original face. The base however is broken. The base is irregular and has not been exposed to much weathering suggesting that it was protected within a structure or the ground while the top remained exposed. The fragment measures 18.5 cm in width, 7.0 cm in length and 5.7 > 2 cm in depth. A decorated stone fragment dating to the Early-Medieval period. The stone is a pointed oval in plan and is rectangular in cross-section. The stone is carved in rel…

Carved stone head dating to the Medieval period. The object is oval in plan and the carving is quite realistic in style. It depicts a male face with staring eyes, a wide nose and a straight linear mouth. The cheeks are rounded and taper into a rounded chin. The carving has chin-length hair which is an unusual style and appears to be wavy. The carving is attached to a rectangular block of stone.

Head on plinth carved from local red sandstone. Well defined features, well carved. Uncertain whether male or female. Appears to be wearing a bonnet or hood that covers the ears and extends beneath the chin. The back of the bonnet is carved into a series of six horizontal 'rolls'. A necktie is tied in a bow beneath the chin. Uncertain function but is probably part of the common tradition of carving stone heads in the North of England which extends back, at least, to the Roman period and is still practised today. A sculpted stone head of a man that appears to be in the style of the late medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1400-1700). The head is in the form of a man with worn facial features. It has deeply set eyes and a prominent brow, the bridge of the nose is mostly missing with only the lower part of the nose and nostrils surviving. The lips are well defined and partially opened. The figure displays facial hair with a wavy moustache and beard the covers the chin and cheeks. The hair is rendered in a similarly wavy style and is chin length so that it frames the face. A stone head of post-medieval to modern date, c.1800-1950. The original block appears to have been saw cut. The head is naturalistic in its style with large parted lips, a sub-triangular nose, and oval eyes with hollowed out pupils. The brows are ridged and the cheek bones high while the chin has been squared off. The edge of the head is undulating in order to form wavy or undulating hair. The rear of the object is flattened and rough. The stone is mid-grey in colour and has suffered due to weathering. Dimensions: 280mm in length, 140mm in width, 150mm thick.

A incomplete lead alloy decorative object of post-medieval to modern date. The object is U-shaped in plan with an undulating upper edge and has been bent out of shape, possibly due to recent damage from the plough. The outer face is decorated with two tall leaves which are separated by four vertical grooves. The decoration is moulded and surrounded by a grooved border. The rear of the object is undecorated. A limestone label stop or corbel in the form of a male head. The carving dates between the late 13th to mid 14th century. The head is that of a young-looking male, probably an adolescant. The head is life-like and in good condition. The face is oval, narrow and has large pointed-oval shaped eyes. The eye lids are clearly defined, as are the tear-ducts in the inner corners. The nose is slightly damaged at the tip. The mouth is clearly defined and carved to give it the appearance of a gentle smile. The centre of the mouth is also damaged. Small stone sculpture of a female goddess nursing an infant (Dea Nutrix). It is complete except the head. The female is draped in dress and cloak and breast-feeding a small child. This suggests the representation of another form of Mother Goddess as a "nursing mother", i.e. Dea Nutrix. Statues like this one but made from clay were mass-produced in Gaul and exported to Britain - they all show the young goddess seated in a high-backed wicker chair nursing one or two infants. An unusually complex fourth-century infant grave excavated in Baldock, Herts., in 1988 produced a compl…

Stone sculpture; sandstone head. Orange-yellow fine-grained sandstone. Short hair, no fringe, cut around the ears, lumpy appearance as if thick and curly; there is a groove running from the front hairline just off-centre along the top of the head to the crown (possibly damage or meant to be a parting). Forehead has a bulge on the right and slopes downwards and inwards on the left. Simple oval eyes, now damaged, apparently originally undetailed. An incomplete stone head, probably dating to the late-Iron Age to early-Roman period (c.100 BC-AD c.100), but possibly 19th century. It is missing fragments from its sides. The head has some features which are common on Iron Age heads. These include the lentoid eyes, triangular nose and flat face with a blank expression on it. The head has a bushy but short beard and mosutache. Also notable are the 'radiates' around the top and sides of the face which may represent brushed back hair. The head also appears to wear a large headdress which covers the entire top and back of the head. …
