Fragment of a Medieval stone sculpture of an unidentified secular figure probably dating to c.AD 1320-1450. The fragment consists of the upper torso and shows the figure with their right arm bent forward at the elbow and lost and wearing a tunic and mantle. Traces of red paint colour survive on the mantle. The tunic has a fairly deeply indented trapezoid neckline and is quite full with folds running down the body and is possibly a green-brown colour, darker than the skin above. A typical example a carved stone head, often loosely referred to as 'Celtic' heads, that are found in some numbers in Britain, the great majority of which, including this one, are un-dateable. The object is carved in red sandstone. The head has a pointed-oval shaped flat face with incised lentoid eyes. Roman limestone carving. The limestone block is roughly rectangular however the sides and back are rough and appear to be damaged. The front of the carving has a different patina to the sides and reverse, being a more weathered grey-brown as opposed to relatively fresh limestone yellow-grey of the breaks. The carving depicts an erect penis with testicles below and vagina above. Similar carvings are known from military and urban sites in Roman Britain and were often made to avert the evil eye.
