The object is a carved stone sculpture of a probable boar or pig. A close comparison has not, so far, been found, therefore the date is not certain. However, Martin Henig has commented in correspondence that he doesn’t see why it is not Roman, and mentions a boar discovered in Bath, Wiltshire (Henig, M. The Art of Roman Britain). The head is naturalistic in its style with large parted lips, a sub-triangular nose, and oval eyes with hollowed out pupils. The brows are ridged and the cheek bones high while the chin has been squared off. The edge of the head is undulating in order to form wavy or undulating hair. The rear of the object is flattened and rough. The stone is mid-grey in colour and has suffered due to weathering. Dimensions: 280mm in length, 140mm in width, 150mm thick.

Roman limestone carving. The limestone block is roughly rectangular however the sides and back are rough and appear to be damaged. The front of the carving has a different patina to the sides and reverse, being a more weathered grey-brown as opposed to relatively fresh limestone yellow-grey of the breaks.
