Carved stone head, possibly from an ecclesiastical building of uncertain date, but likely to be from the later medieval period (c. 1100-1300AD). The stone is greyish sandstone and appears to represent the bust, possibly of an angel, with a stylised wing folded across the chest. The features of the face are quite crudely executed. The eyes are an oval shaped outline with a circular hole for the pupil. The nose is a simple crudely cut rectangle whilst the downturned mouth is a slot cut into the stone. It is unclear if the feature below the mouth opening is intended to represent a l…

The object is a carved stone sculpture of a probable boar or pig. A close comparison has not, so far, been found, therefore the date is not certain. However, Martin Henig has commented in correspondence that he doesn’t see why it is not Roman, and mentions a boar discovered in Bath, Wiltshire (Henig, M. The Art of Roman Britain). The stone the object is carved from is an igneous rock, which has been very weathered. The object was probably carved from a weathered pebble, and not a fragment of rock taken immediately from a larger portion. The stone is a medium coarse grained …

A carved stone head, often loosely referred to as a 'Celtic' head. 'Celtic' heads are found in some numbers in Britain, the great majority of which, including this one, are un-dateable. A date range of 600 BC - AD 1900 is therefore possible. The head has an oval flat face with convex lentoid eyes. The nose is long and flattened, expanding slightly in width towards the nostrils, but the lower nose is damaged. The lips are also damaged, but are closed and a little downturned. There are no ears nor hair depicted, but the carving has a smooth rounded pate. The rear of the head is rou…

Fragment of a Medieval stone sculpture of an unidentified secular figure probably dating to c.AD 1320-1450. The fragment consists of the upper torso and shows the figure with their right arm bent forward at the elbow and lost and wearing a tunic and mantle. Traces of red paint colour survive on the mantle. The tunic has a fairly deeply indented trapezoid neckline and is quite full with folds running down the body and is possibly a green-brown colour, darker than the skin above. The mantle is draped over the shoulders and across the body in wide diagonal folds at the waist. Above the w…
